St. John's Primary School is situated to the south of St. John's Parish Church and to the north of Colleton's Great House and the former sugar factory building. It is surrounded by the districts of Gall Hill and Carter's to the west, Church View and Clifton Hall to the north and Glebe Land, Pot House and Colleton Land to the east.
This school is approximately ten to twelve miles to the east of the capital city of Bridgetown. Its strategic position gives a visitor a panoramic view of a stretch of the eastern part of the vast Atlantic Ocean.
According to a report on the full inspection of the school for the period 4th-8th February 1952, the early history is uncertain as regards to the dates. The first Head Teacher was Mr Yorke Russell, who after serving for several years, was succeeded by Mr T.N. Stuart.
The school was co-educational until the closing year of the nineteenth century when the sexes were separated and Miss Millars was appointed Headmistress of the Girls' school to be succeeded by Miss J. Gill.
At the Boys’ school, Mr Stuart was succeeded in 1925 by Mr J. R. Bailey during whose tenure of office the increase of numbers necessitated the extension of the building on two occasions.
Upon Mr Bailey’s resignation in 1946, Mr L. Thorne was appointed in 1948 when Miss Gill resigned from the Girls’ School, an amalgamation was effected and co-education resumed after a period of about fifty years. The school was then named St. John’s Mixed School. That name changed to St. John’s Primary in 1984-1985 when all the seniors from Class 5 through to Class 7 were transferred to Senior and Composite Schools.
History was created at the St. John’s Primary School when Miss H.M. McClean assumed headship on June 1st, 1978. She was the first female head of the school since its amalgamation.
Today, St. John’s Primary School, is a vibrant and outstanding co-educational institution, which continues to make an invaluable contribution to the education of pupils between the ages of 4 and 11 plus.
The staff of the St. John’s Primary School believes that all pupils can learn. Moreover, it is of the view that each child has unique qualities and abilities which, when developed, can contribute to the wider society. Hence, a child-centred philosophy provides the foundation for all teaching experiences such as field trips and practical classroom activities.
The school believes in the holistic development of its students. While it caters to the academic development of its pupils, it is aware that students possess multiple intelligences, and so it seeks to nurture the development of individual students in their particular areas of strength.
The staff also recognizes the importance of multiple media in the delivery of instruction. As a result, it uses technology to enhance the teaching-learning process, as it prepares its students to live in a highly technological world.
The St. John’s Primary School believes that the success of its pupils is not dependent on the efforts of its staff alone. It, therefore, fosters a positive parent-school partnership. Frequent communication between home-school is encouraged.
Our Mission is to utilise wholistic teaching strategies that encourage students to develop to their maximum potential through a learning environment that emphasizes discovery, critical thinking and creativity within a culture of excellence as we prepare students for effective citizenship in a changing world.
A graduate of St. John Primary should demonstrate competencies in basic literacy and numeracy skills, value creativity, problem-solving processes and make wise choices that will impact positively on the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual self and others in the community.
