The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) was founded in 1987 by David Packard. The mission of MBARI is to achieve and maintain a position as a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology, and to do so through the development of better instruments, systems, and methods for scientific research in the deep waters of the ocean. MBARI emphasizes the peer relationship between engineers and scientists as a basic principle of its operation. All of the activities of MBARI must be characterized by excellence, innovation, and vision.
Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) was founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt in 2009 to enable technologically-advanced ocean exploration that expands understanding of the world’s ocean by openly sharing information. Using the state-of-the-art systems onboard Research Vessel Falkor, the institute is able to support multidisciplinary international collaborations from the edge of the ice sheets to the tropics in some of the world’s most remote locations. Schmidt Ocean Institute supports high-risk oceanographic research as well as expeditions aimed at developing and testing innovative oceanographic technologies, practices, and analytical methods. R/V Falkor commenced science services in 2013 following a year of sea trials. Since then, Falkor has hosted numerous international science teams and institutes, successfully supporting numerous deep ocean missions.
Since 1930, WHOI scientists and engineers have laid the groundwork for many of the discoveries that have revolutionized our knowledge about the ocean and its impacts on our planet and our lives. From the discovery of hydrothermal vents to the development of revolutionary ocean technology to mapping global ocean circulation, our research matters now more than ever before. WHOI combines an unparalleled breadth of experience, insight, and resources with a deeply ingrained culture of curiosity and innovation to pursue creative solutions to timely problems. This makes us one of the most tested and technically advanced centers of pure and applied ocean research and exploration.
