Recent changes to the terms and conditions of the online gaming platform Roblox mean that parents and carers will have less control over the content children are able to access and money children will be able to spend in games. This is particularly relevant to players aged 13+, but there are also changes for those aged under 9 to be aware of too:
Users under 9
Roblox T+C: "Users under the age of 9 also need parent permission to access all chat features as well as experiences with content maturity “Moderate,” which may contain things like moderate violence or moderate crude humor."
What this means: This means parents can consent to their children under 9 accessing moderate violence.
Users 13+
Roblox T+C: "In most regions, after a user turns 13, their parents will no longer be able to manage their privacy settings, and spend and screen time limits will no longer apply. In addition, their parents will no longer receive spending-related notifications by default."
What this means: Children can spend unrestricted time and money on Roblox without parents getting default notifications, and children can change their privacy settings without parental oversight (e.g. sharing location, phone number, photos, entering chat rooms, sending voice notes).

What families can do:
Make sure children’s accounts use their real age
Regularly check that parental controls are in place, especially those which may be an ‘opt in’ feature as children get older. Step by step guide to parental controls Roblox parental controls guide | Internet Matters

Oversee all gaming in a family space, try to avoid devices in bedrooms and the use of headphones, especially for children under 12.
Be aware of other apps and platforms children may use alongside gaming for chat e.g. Discord and who they may be communicating with in these environments.
