I am a middle school student who wants better for my communities. This began as a class project, yet the issue is much more than that. I.C.E. invading homes and kidnapping people shouldn't be political- it's a human rights issue.
ICE has put a thick layer of fear on all immigrants in State College and the surrounding areas. This has greatly influenced important decisions and made innocent people feel unsafe. My goal is to make a change by raising awareness, protesting, and writing to advocate against the Moshannon Valley Processing Center and the general presence of ICE.
I.C.E. stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I.C.E. has wrongfully detained innocent, legal immigrants all over the U.S. under the claim that they are capturing criminals and "illegal aliens". There have been 13 daily average arrests daily, up 249% from 2024.
I.C.E. doesn't operate on a schedule. We see I.C.E. shootings and arrests all over the news, and there's no telling when they'll appear in your neighborhood. You may think that you're safe from I.C.E. because you're not an immigrant, that you're not who I.C.E is there to arrest, but evidence has shown that I.C.E. affects everyone. The recent shootings and murders of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota proves that.
Along with this, I.C.E. has made various appearances in Pennsylvania, and those appearances are not restricted to Philadelphia or Harrisburg. In March of 2025, I.C.E. arrested one person in State College. On August 19th, 2025, I.C.E. arrested about two dozen construction workers on their way to work at the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pennsylvania. I.C.E. made the arrest along the highway, not on hospital property. In Spotlight PA, a local news journalist, writes "in the nearby Lehigh Valley, I.C.E. arrested 17 people in June who were working on an unoccupied property for "immigration violations". That same month, 14 people were arrested in the Pittsburgh area and three in northeast Pennsylvania during similar raids." I.C.E. is not making anyone safer.
I.C.E. claims that its intentions are right and will significantly lower crime rates. On their homepage, they proudly present 5 new articles about I.C.E. arrests of "illegal aliens". This term is used consistently to describe immigrants, making it heavily implied that all
of the immigrants in this country are drug dealers, abusers, or criminals, which is untrue. Roughly 37% to 40% of Americans approve of and support I.C.E., meaning that most don't approve, but that's still not enough.
I.C.E. is harming and endangering all of our communities in central PA. They are inflicting fear upon everyone and threatening violence, which is not only an extreme misuse of power, but also unprofessional and immature. However, it's not too late to make a change and protect the people of Pennsylvania.
