*The 7th and 8th graders learn all about this table set up in our classroom. Each item on the table is significant to veterans, especially the Prisoners of War (POW) and the Missing In Action (MIA.) The table honors all veterans. A small table is used to represent the battle the veteran has against many. The white tablecloth represents the veteran's pure heart for being a part of our country's military. The lemon slice represents the veteran's bitter fate. The grains of salt represent the tears of military family members waiting for their loved ones to return, especially our POWs and MIAs. The empty chair is for the MIAs. The black napkin represents the POW's sorrow of captivity. The overturned glass stands for the meal that will not be eaten at the table. The white candle symbolizes peace. The red rose in a vase with a red ribbon tied around it stands for the hope that our MIAs will return someday. The meanings and symbolization vary. These representations are what the students learn from reading author Margot Theis Raven's book: America's White Table. These tables can be found at mess halls, American Legions, and Veterans of Foreign Wars establishments all across America since the Vietnam War ended. Our local Catholic War Veterans has one set up in their facility.
*The Smithton Catholic War Veterans Auxilary is having a contest for kindergarten through 8th grade. The 7th & 8th graders contest was to make a Veterans Day Posters honoring the local veterans. I turned our posters in on Friday, November 4th. I made copies of 55 of the 128 posters to help decorate the lobby by the gym for our veterans to see tomorrow at our special Veterans Day Assembly. The 7th and 8th graders did a really nice job on this project.
*The 7th and 8th graders made patriotic agamographs to hang on their lockers. If you look at it from one direction you see the American Flag, and when looking at it from the other direction, you see soldiers saluting. An Israeli sculptor named Yaacov Agam created this type of art using lenticular printing.
*The 7th graders made a Veterans Day Cards for a 7th grader's parent, who is currently serving overseas. They made another Veterans Day card for other members in this parent's unit. The 8th graders made this parent Christmas cards, and they made Season Greetings cards for other members in this parent's unit.
*The 7th graders & 8th graders recently signed a poster for a 7th grader's grandfather and great-grandfather, who went on the 100th Honor Flight that the Greater Saint Louis Area Chapter did on Tuesday, November 1st, which was the last Honor Flight of the 2022 year. The poster was held up for the return celebration of this wonderful event. The 7th graders wrote letters to be given to Honor Flight veterans that will attend next years Greater Saint Louis Area Chapter's Honor Flights. These letters will be given out during the mail call portion of the event. If you would like to nominate your veteran, which I encouraged my 8th graders last year to do and the 7th graders this year to do, then here is the application website for nominating your veterans.
