ASSIGNMENT
Project Description
Students will create a digital artwork exploring the concept of duality or dichotomy. Using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or another digital art platform, students will represent contrasting ideas, such as light vs. dark, order vs. chaos, nature vs. technology, or life vs. death. The artwork should thoughtfully integrate elements of composition, color theory, and conceptual meaning to visually communicate the contrast. Students will present their work with an artist’s statement explaining their interpretation of duality or dichotomy and the choices behind their design.
Vocabulary

Balance - The distribution of visual weight in an artwork, which can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Conceptual Art - Art in which the idea or concept presented by the artist is more important than the finished product.
Composition - The placement or arrangement of visual elements in a piece of artwork.

Big Ideas
Art Reflects Contrasts: Art has the power to communicate complex ideas by juxtaposing opposing forces or themes.
Interpreting Duality: Opposites can exist simultaneously in harmony or tension, enriching our understanding of the world.
Art as Communication: Visual art can act as a bridge to explore and express nuanced, multifaceted ideas.
Learning Objectives
Students will:
Analyze the concept of duality and dichotomy in visual art and other media.
Develop a clear artistic vision for representing contrasting ideas in their own digital artwork.
Apply advanced digital art techniques to create a visually compelling composition.
Incorporate design principles such as contrast, balance, and symbolism into their work.
Articulate the meaning and intent behind their artwork in an artist’s statement.
