Drum Sander Safety

To create flat, level, smooth faces on a piece of wood.

Why we use it:

Sanding is the most time consuming part of woodworking, often taking many hours to complete per project. To help speed up the process, the drum sander is used. The drum sander has two large cylinders that are covered with

Safety Concerns

Prior to starting the machine:

  • Make sure you have your safety glasses on
  • The dust collector should be turned on
  • Measure the thickness of your board, and set the table height on the drum sander to the same measurement.
  • Make sure the floor is clean and free of any tripping hazards around the drum sander.


When operating the machine:

  • Make sure to turn on the drums and conveyor belt (separate switches)
  • The conveyor belt should never be set above 70.
  • Between passes the table elevation hand-wheel should never be adjusted more than â…› of a turn. (clockwise to raise table)
  • Wood will need to be sent through the drum sander multiple times to achieve a flat and sanded board (usually 3 times per side)
  • When finished with the machine, turn off the drums and conveyor belt before leaving the drum sander.

Once you have completed reviewing all of the information, have received a demonstration from the instructor, and tried the machine, take the safety test below. You must receive a perfect score (100%) on all safety tests.
