How should my child prepare for a quiz/quest/test?
Your child should look over the notes (s)he has from the class.
If applicable , (s)he should make index cards with important points of information.
Your child should attend after school office hours. (S)he should come prepared with questions about the material that (s)he is having difficulty understanding.
(S)he should discuss with the teacher the types of ways (s)he is preparing for the assessment.
(S)he should complete study guides well in advance.
Students should review materials nightly. Cramming for tests and quizzes the night before is not an effective study technique.
When should I expect a mid-period progress report?
You will receive a mid-period progress report from each member of the academic team the week of:
October 11th
January 7th
March 19th
June 4th
My child is not open to staying after school for extra help (which she/he needs). How can we work together to encourage her/him to stay after school for academic help?
We encourage parents to discuss with their children the benefits of staying after school. Office Hours (extra help) should not be viewed as a punishment but instead as an opportunity to work on skills or assignments in an environment free from the distractions of home. If students are hesitant to stay (which is understandable for 6th graders new to the school) we encourage them to have a "growth mindset" and try, if only to see what it is like and how that time spent in school would benefit them. Students do not have to ask the teacher questions but instead may choose to work on homework, projects, or other activities related to the subject they choose to stay for. It has been our experience that once students come for the first time they will be more likely to attend on a consistent basis.
In the event of an absence (whether planned or unexpected), what is the protocol for missed classwork and homework?
Regardless of the reason for absence, all students are responsible for making up any missed classwork and assignments and assessments. All Cooper 6 Team assignments are posted on the team calendar and on our Schoology pages. We urge students to check them daily. Upon their return to school, students are expected to check in with their teachers, during after school office hours to make up any missed work (class notes, a missed activity or lesson, or to take a missed quiz, quest or test, etc.). While teachers will not provide work in advance for planned absences, students are encouraged to check the team calendar and Schoology pages frequently during the time they are not attending school. While it is not necessary to email teachers in the event of an absence, parents should notify the Cooper Office.
Please feel free to send an email to any of the Cooper 6 teachers if you have any further questions.
