Welcome to Second Grade! I hope you are having a wonderful summer. I am so excited to have you in class this year. We are going to have so much fun together! Some highlights of second grade include starting a newscast to inform Greenacres of important information in our community, as an extension of our social studies curriculum. In science, our first unit will focus on properties of matter and you will design and build your own swing set. In math, we are going to use patterns to solve problems, learn how to efficiently manipulate two and three digit numbers, focus on measurement, and learn about geometry. We are going to focus on writing personal narratives in writing so start thinking about all of those wonderful memories (losing a tooth, a vacation highlight, an adventure, moving etc.) so you can write with lots of detail. In reading, we will become more fluent readers, as we read fiction and nonfiction books, as well as work in book clubs throughout the year. In addition to all our schoolwork, we will also learn many new games to play during our fun Fridays and work on building a safe and positive classroom community.
