Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power
Searching for a good just right book for you child?
To find books that are “just-right" for your child....
Turn to any page in the book and have your child read 1-2 pages.
Use the “5-finger-rule" with your child as she/he reads. This means that while your child is reading 1-2 pages, if there are 5 words, phrases, or ideas on the page that cause any trouble, the book is too difficult at this time. (That does, to some extent, depend on the length of the page. In some books you might make it three, or even one.) The child must understand not just the decoding, but the meaning. It is better at this stage to be reading a book a little too easy than way too difficult.
S
eries books are very motivational.
One of the reasons that students enjoy reading series books is that once they read the first book in the series and like it, there are instantly more books from the rest of the series that they will ant to read. Another reason is that students develop a sense of satisfaction as they follow their beloved characters through different experiences!
