Hello [David] thank you for your time. I am collecting data for a research project pertaining to automobile parking, is it alright if I use your response as part of my project? You may feel some of my questions personal, if you are uncomfortable with answering them just let me know and I will move on. Do you have any questions for me before I start?
Yes you may. I don’t have any questions.
Warm up:
(maybe a gender question regarding how they choose to identify, it may show that one gender identity feels a certain way when they cant find parking over others)
May I ask, how old are you?
Do you prefer public or private transportation, and why?
Do you own a car, why or why not?
If so ^^^, then …
What type of automobile do you drive?
I am 21 years old. I prefer driving on my 2011 Toyota Sienna because there is a lot more freedom on where you can drive and you don’t have to rely on someone to drive for you.
Did you have a hard time searching for a place to park today? If so, how did you respond to it? If not what prior experiences have you had where you found parking difficult?
I had an easy time parking today. I used to have trouble parking in New York City. It was a struggle to find parking nearby my arrived destination at fourth street. Eventually, I was lucky enough to find someone who gave up their parking at Broome street.

Having actual real time data of people pulling out of parking spots would be nice.

As long as users have the freedom to control their real-time geolocation data, it is a great idea.

Extremely helpful in case you lose your parking permit and it is a great way for showing digital parking pass
Q15. What are your opinions on smartphone parking apps having their parking rules being updated with the help of their community?
As long as the information is valid, I am fine.
Closing:

(maybe a gender question regarding how they choose to identify, it may show that one gender identity feels a certain way when they cant find parking over others)
May I ask, how old are you?
22 years old
Do you have either a license or permit?
Yes, I have a license!
Do you prefer public or private transportation, and why?
I definitely prefer private because I like the freedom of traveling where I want and wherever I want.

If so ^^^, then …
How often do you drive everyday? What type of automobile do you drive? How many places have you driven to before?
I have a dodge minivan. I drive around 50 miles a day and usually I drive to 4 places a day. I’ve driven to more places than you can imagine (lots of places).
Did you have a hard time searching for a place to park today? If so, how did you respond to it? If not what prior experiences have you had where you found parking difficult?
Yes! Because I parked in a library that had limited spots. I took extra laps around the parking lot until I could find a spot.
Topic 1: Parking
Q1. How often do you drive everyday?
A lot . I drive to school, work, study spots, etc. it’s usually around 50 miles a day.
Q2. How many places have you driven to before?
Too many places
Q3. Do you have either a license or permit?
Yes a license
Q4. How much time do you spend looking for a place to park?
Depends on where I am. School and work I find instant parking but libraries I have a hard time . Or grocery stores or on street parking in New Brunswick.
Q5. Does it matter to you where your car is parked and why?
Yes because I want it to be close to my location so that it’s convenient.
Q6. How often do you find yourself having difficulty looking for a place to park on a daily basis?
Not often because I typically go to places with large parking lots.
Topic 2: Feelings & Experiences
Q7. Describe your experiences with parking apps?
I’ve never used a parking app but I think it would be extremely convenient.
Follow up: Are there any features that you would like to see in that modern-day parking apps lack? Are there any current features that you would like to see be improved on?
I don’t have one but I think it would be cool to see an app that tells you how many parking spots there are left in a parking lot before you go and shows you how close the parking is I navigates you to the closest spot
Q8. Tell me what goes on in your head when you can’t find a place to park?
It’s very frustrating to not find a place to park because It can take up to half hour and I’ll be driving up and down lots to find somewhere to park
Q9. What is the best way to keep you updated about available parking spots (smartphone app, website, email, etc.)?
Definitely smart phone app because it’s some thing that’s always on you it’s easy to look at and I think it would be very convenient
Topic 3: Opinions
Q10. What are your thoughts on the idea of spreading more awareness about parking options through an app?
I think it would help a lot for college students especially because we travel a lot of places and it would be nice to know what the parking will be like in the next location that we are going to
Q11. What do you think about the idea of spreading more awareness about legal consequences for improper parking through a parking app? Would it be helpful?
Yes I see a lot of illegal parking in a lot of places that I go especially if it’s in a college close to a college campus because people just want to park and get to class so it can cause a lot of dangers for other people or can cause hit and runs or any other types of accidents
Q12. Do you think there is anything that can be done to improve parking? How?
I think the best way to improve parking is obviously having more spots however that’s not always possible in certain locations so I think having a parking app that would allow us to know what the parking will be like in our next location will help limit parking issues
Q13. What are your thoughts about using real-time geolocation data to keep track of drivers that are pulling in and out of parking spots?
That’s something I think would be extremely helpful because it will give users the opportunity to see where the closest parking is and whether or not there actually is parking before they waste their time going only to look around for 2030 minutes
Q14. What are your thoughts about having a digital parking pass/permit in an app?
I think that would be fine however like we already have that so I don’t think I would make a difference to put it on an app
Q15. What are your opinions on smartphone parking apps having their parking rules being updated with the help of their community?
I think that’s amazing because smart phone apps are probably one of the most things that people actually listen to so it will give people the opportunity to actually follow the rules that we have versus signs that people may ignore
How would you feel if there was a smartphone app that can be used to identify your parking options?
I think that would be extremely helpful in making my parking decisions because I would be able to know where I’m gonna park before I get there and if there’s parking
Read: Problem Statement from other Google doc
Follow Up: Do you think that you would personally use this kind of service? Why or why not?
Yes because I do go to multiple locations in one day and sometimes I’m short on time so I would like to know if there’s gonna be parking when I get there or not rather than get getting there and wasting time trying to look for parking
Thank you for your response!!
You’re welcome
