The LGBTQ+ communities' information seeking is often heavily tied to their construction of their identity. They seek information in an effort to makes sense of their selves and to create their identities. (Hamer 2003).
44% of young people who searched online for information looked up information related to sexual health, while 10% looked up sexual assault (Rideout 2008).
Information professionals have the opportunity to support LGBTQ+ individuals in their information seeking, which can possibly have a positive effect on their health (Hamer 2003).
Information professionals should seek to make their environments ( both physical and electronic) inviting, safe, and informative for ALL. We have an opportunity and a responsibility to be there for our users and help them with their information needs.
