Ready Freddy
Ready Freddy
The Ready Freddy Program is a partnership between the Scappoose and St. Helens school districts to strengthen the transition to school age for your youngest learners. It was created in collaboration with the Children's Institute, engaged parents, and multiple community partners.
We believe that a quality transition to Kindergarten will bring lifelong benefits to a child. A child’s transition into Kindergarten sets the tone for their educational experience for many years to come. On the first day of school, every Kindergarten child should walk into the classroom feeling excited, ready to learn, and supported by the school, their parents, and their community. Children flourish and learn best in the context of strong and supportive relationships. Unfortunately, almost 50% of children struggle with the transition to kindergarten.
Typically, efforts to enhance school readiness are focused on academic skills and social-emotional development. Unfortunately, neither is the best predictor of school success. More important is the quality of the relationship between the kindergarten teacher and the child’s preschool caregiver. The Ready Freddy Program is unique in that we work to bring together all the necessary elements and participants for a quality transition.
Upcoming Events - Don't Miss Out!
Click the links above to print either an English or Spanish version of the Scappoose and St. Helens School Districts Kindergarten Readiness Calendar. The calendar is full of activities to prepare your future Kindergarten learner for their first school-age experience. We have also included Ready Freddy social events for families and Kindergarten Club dates for parents/caregivers and their student(s). The 2022-23 school calendars have not been approved just yet, but we prepared tentative summer and start of the school year events based on our projections.
Elements of the Ready Freddy Program
Transition Events are intended to be social activities supported by many of the students in the child development programs and other volunteers. These activities are focused on care and connection. The hope is that your child will build friendships prior to school, and parents will build a network of support with other families.
Participation is optional.
Kindergarten Club events are more structured play dates facilitated by Preschool and Kindergarten teachers as well as program administrators. They include activities that will give your child a jumpstart for kindergarten and workshops for parents to build their confidence entering the school-age experience.
Participation is optional.
Scappoose School District calls the kindergarten registration event Kindergarten Connect. Future kindergarten students and their parent/caregiver can expect to learn about school, try a physical education class, tour the buildings, experience a structured play date and snack with other kids preparing for school. The adults will also learn about the parent organizations, summer supports, and how best to prepare for Kindergarten. Staff will provide instructions for registration and Kindergarten Camp Enrollment.
Grant Watts Elementary, 5/4/22, 5:30-7 p.m.
Warren Elementary, 5/3/22, 5:30-7 p.m.
*** you may want to attend both as our district has open boundaries and your child may be enrolled at either school
Participation should be prioritized.
