VIKINGS WIN GMC RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS!
On Saturday evening (1/6) the South Brunswick Boys' Track and Field team won their 5th straight GMC Relays Championship with a narrow one point victory over rival East Brunswick. It was a gutsy performance from start to finish for the team, who was without several of their top runners. The distance medley of Vishnu Maharaj, Pranav Rao, Nate Goldin, and Akhul Ladda started off the scoring with a 4th place in the distance medley. The shot put tandem of Braden Paulmenn and Matt Pierre captured the team's only varsity gold medals of the night, led by a huge personal best throw from Paulmenn of 52'2"! The team picked up 4 more points in the 4x200m relay made up of Jayden Davis, Jason Keiser, Anshul Jha, and Advaith Boopalam. The 4x800 ran to a vital 2nd place finish behind the efforts of Arth Batra, Vishnu Maharaj, Sebastian Candelaria, and Pranav Rao. The sprint med of Jha, Davis, Keiser, and Jai Balakanagaram would also win silver medals and score another 8 points for the team. This set the meet up for a thrilling finish with the Vikings, East Brunswick, North Brunswick and Metuchen all mathematically in the running for the team title. Down three points to East Brunswick going into the 4x400m race the Vikings team of Jha, Boopalam, Rao, and Keiser needed to finish two places ahead of East Brunswick to secure the victory. With a 3rd place finish the team also got the help they needed to complete the come from behind victory!

Jeylon Billups led all novice shot putters with a throw of 45'2.5", which would have been the 3rd best throw in the varsity division!

Jason Keiser broke the indoor school record for the 55m hurdles while placing 2nd in the finals at the Armory Holiday Classic. Keiser's time of 7.43 seconds smashed the previous record by Ola Porbeni of 7.52 seconds. His time currently has him sitting 2nd in NJ and 7th in the country!

The Frosh Boys became the fourth group of SB freshmen to win the Egg Club Invitational Championship. It would be the first of 3 gold medals for Davis who would also win the 55m dash and the 300m. The Boys Winter Track Team had an outstanding day at the GMC Championship Meet, winning the Red Division title, but fell just short of winning the overall GMC Championship. The team competed hard all meet with numerous personal best performances. It was a balanced effort with 10 different athletes scoring points in eight of the nine events. Damarion Potts repeated as GMC champions in the high jump and also added a 4th place finish in the 400m. The shot put duo of Braden Paulmenn and Christian Farhat each had monster PR throws over 49' in the shot put and placed 3rd and 4th respectively. In the hurdles Jason Keiser took the silver medal and Karol Porbeni finished 3rd. Darren Rodman would add 4 points for his 4th place finish in the 55m dash. Nick Johnson (800m), Aiden Silva (1600m) and Vinay Narayanan (3200m) each placed 6th while running gutsy races. The Vikings continued their dominance at the GMC Relay Championships, winning their fourth title in a row, making that 9 titles in the last 11 year! It was also the 10th indoor relay championship in school history. It was a tremendous balanced team effort with the boys placing top three in 8 of the 9 events, and winning the meet by 20 points! There were four first place finishes for the Vikings. The shuttle hurdle team of Karol Porbeni, Jason Keiser, Jacob Brokaw, and Damarion Potts won convincingly for the teams first gold medals. Potts and Keiser captured their second gold medals of the meet along with Darren Rodman and Khiri Summers on the 4x200m relay. Potts would then get a 3rd gold medal teaming up with Brokaw again in the HJ. The fourth first place finish came in the shot put where Braden Paulmenn and Christian Farhat blew away the competition. The team also place 2nd in the Sprint Medley, 2nd in the 4x400m, 3rd in the Distance Medley, and 3rd in the 4x800m relay.

The Vikings started the season off with a strong showing at the Leon Bailey Relays in Jersey City this past Friday (12/16). The team won gold in the shot put (Christian Farhat and Braden Paulmenn), the 4x200m (Jayden Davis, Jason Keiser, Khiri Summers, and Damarion Potts), and ran the current fastest time in NJ in the shuttle hurdles (Karol Porbeni, Jacob Brokaw, Jason Keiser, Damarion Potts). The team added a second place finish in the distance medley and a 3rd place in the 4x800m.

Damarion Potts Continues Stellar Season With 4th Straight Gold in High Jump at the GMC Championships!
Damarion Potts has dominated the high jump all winter, breaking records and winning championships. Since breaking the school record with his 6'8.25" jump, Damarion has won the State Sectional Championship, the GMC Relays Championship (with Amit Vankadhara), the Group 4 State Championship, and most recently the GMC Championship, where he broke the meet record with his 6'7.25" jump. Next up, Damarion looks to win the New Jersey State Meet of Champions.
Damarion Potts has dominated the high jump all winter, breaking records and winning championships. Matt Nurse led off the meet with a thrilling 400m race in which he finished 2nd place. JC Martinez also took home a silver medal with his 2nd place finish in the shot put, where Christian Farhat also took 3rd place. The 4x400 team of Nurse, Ryan Nartey, Eric Li, and Karol Porbeni also medaled with their 3rd place finish. Other scorers included Amit Vankadhara with an indoor PR of 6'0" in high jump for 5th place, Karol Porbeni with 4th place in the hurdles, Darren Rodman placing 6th in the 55m, and Arunmozhi Kannan scoring in both the 1600m and 3200m races.
The team had a strong showing, finishing 2nd place as a team. Sahil Sheth had the team's other 1st place finish, winning an exciting 1600m race. Matt Nurse led off the meet with a thrilling 400m race in which he finished 2nd place. JC Martinez also took home a silver medal with his 2nd place finish in the shot put, where Christian Farhat also took 3rd place. The 4x400 team of Nurse, Ryan Nartey, Eric Li, and Karol Porbeni also medaled with their 3rd place finish. Other scorers included Amit Vankadhara with an indoor PR of 6'0" in high jump for 5th place, Karol Porbeni with 4th place in the hurdles, Darren Rodman placing 6th in the 55m, and Arunmozhi Kannan scoring in both the 1600m and 3200m races.

Vikings Dominate All-Conference/All-Division Team
The Vikings dominated the GMC All-Conference and All Red Division Teams for Winter Track and Field this season. I normally would have announced this at our varsity awards ceremony, but with the uncertainty of when they will be, I thought I should announce it now so you are not waiting forever for some good news. The team had 6 athletes named All-Conference and 10 named All Red Division! Our All-Conference representatives are Ola Porbeni in the 55m Dash, Adam Gorka in the 400m, Vidhur Polam in the 1600m, Dante Bailey in high jump, and Majid Howard Baker and Danny O'Grady receiving at large bids (the next best 8 athletes who did not win an event at GMCs, as voted by the GMC coaches). The All Red Division Team honors went to Adam Gorka, Davis Wittenburg, Ola Porbeni, and Charles Katona for the 4x400m relay, Vidhur Polam for the 1600m, Dante Bailey for high jump, Danny O'Grady for shot put, and Javier Santiago, Majid Howard Baker, and Joe Carlson received at large bids. Congrats to all our All-Conference/Division athletes.
I am hoping to have a better idea of how we are going to proceed with our winter awards after Spring break and will keep you posted as I receive information. Adam also earned 1st Team All-Group 4, along with Ola Porbeni who earned First Team Group 4 in the 55m Dash. Also making the list was Dante Bailey, earning 2nd Team Group 4 in the high jump and Danny O'Grady earning 3rd Team in the Shot Put.

The Boys' Winter Track team concluded its historic season by doing what they do best, winning medals and breaking records. Adam Gorka not only showed he is one of the best 400m runners in the state, he proved he is the best 400m runner in the state, winning the 400m dash in the fastest time in New Jersey this winter! His time also moves him up to 3rd place on the all-time indoor 400m performance list for Middlesex County. Vidhur Polam broke his own 3200m school record yet again, taking down the Middlesex county record as well with his 9:09.54, and placed 6th overall. Javier Santiago kept improving all season and his hard work helped him earn 6th place in the pole vault as he once again tied his indoor PR and school record of 14'6". The 4x400m relay team of Davis Wittenburg, Ola Porbeni, Charles Katona, and Adam Gorka closed out the meet in fitting fashion, with 7th place medals and another school record with their time of 3:25.64.

The South Brunswick Boys' Winter Track Team won the Group IV State Championship yesterday (2/29), outscoring second place Jackson Memorial 39-25! Nine different athletes scored points in a balanced effort, with all event groups contributing to the win. Adam Gorka once again opened up the scoring with a 4th place finish in the 400m. The throwers continued their strong season placing 4th and 5th in the shot put, with Joe Carlson tossing a PR throw of 50'4.25" and Danny O'Grady throwing 50'2.75". Ola Porbeni would capture the first of his 3 medals with a 3rd place finish in the 55m hurdles while Javier Santiago had a season best of 14'6" in the pole vault, tying for 3rd place. Ola then clinched the victory for the team by winning the Group IV 55m Dash Championship, scoring 10 points, and breaking the school record in the process with a time of 6.44 seconds. Vidhur Polam would also go on to smash his own school record during his 4th place finish in the 3200m race, besting his previous PR by over 15 seconds, with a time of 9:16.63! Dante Bailey continued his spectacular senior season placing 5th in the high jump, clearing 6'2". With the meet already clinched, the 4x400m relay team of Davis Wittenburg, Ola Porbeni, Charles Katona, and Adam Gorka would add two more points for good measure with a 5th place finish, and punch their ticket to the State Meet Of Champions. This was the program's 2nd Group IV State Championship, the first coming when Coach Murray led the team to victory in 2014 as an athlete. The team's 97.5 points are the most points ever scored by a Group IV team at a sectional meet, and 57 points is the all time largest margin of victory at a Group IV sectional meet. The Vikings opened up with 2nd place finishes in the first three events (Adam Gorka - 400m, Vidhur Polam- 1600m, Ola Porbeni - 55m Hurdles), and then would go on an incredible run winning six of the last seven events. Danny O'Grady captured the first gold medal of the meet for the team, winning the shot put with a massive PR throw of 52'4.25", and teammate Joe Carlson would also heave a monstrous PR of 50'2.75" for 3rd place. Next, Dante Bailey came up huge, clearing 6'4" in high jump on his 3rd attempt for the win, while Majid Howard Baker tied for 5th. Back on the track Ola Porbeni would get revenge for his 55m hurdle loss with a gold medal performance in the 55m dash, with Majid once again placing 5th. The Vikings continued to display their dominance at the Purple Champions Invitational this past Saturday (2/15), winning the Team Pentathlon, and breaking two school records. Adam Gorka and Davis Wittenburg continued their impressive season, each breaking a school record. Davis broke Matt Bacchi's 600m record with a time of 1:25.91 and Adam broke Chuk Oruebor's 300m record in a time of 36.01. The meet featured a team pentathlon, where the pentathlon point system was used to score different athletes in the five traditional indoor pentathlon events, the long jump, high jump, high hurdles, shot put, and 1000m run. The Vikings won by a wide margin with Majid Howard Baker in long jump, Dante Bailey winning the high jump (6'2"), Danny O'Grady winning the shot put, Ola Porbeni placing 2nd in the hurdles, and Vidhur Polam finishing 2nd in the 1000m and narrowly missing a school record. As a group, the team scored 3907 points, 855 more than second place! Other highlights included Amit Vankadhara placing 2nd in the high jump with a PR jump of 5'11.25" and Dante Bailey placing 5th in the 55m dash, with a PR in the prelims of 6.78.

The team scored a whopping 91 points, 36 more than runner up East Brunswick. Adam Gorka set the tone in the first event, placing 2nd in the 400m with an indoor PR time of 50.32. Vidhur Polam followed that up with an indoor PR of his own to win the 1600m with a time of 4:30.51. Ola Porbeni fell just short of 1st in the 55m hurdles placing 2nd, but would come back strong with PR in the 55m dash to win the gold. Majid Howard Baker also placed in the dash with one of his three 4th place medals (pv, 4x400m). The Distance Medley set the tone early with an impressive win. Josh Gumber provided a strong lead off leg, Adam Gorka and Archit Myadam would help take the lead, and Vidhur Polam ran a blazing 4:31 1600m anchor leg for the win. Next, the shuttle hurdle team of Majid Howard-Baker, Ola Porbeni, Greg Williams, and Wan Ye ran a strong race for a 2nd place finish. The 4x200m relay then blew away the competition with Ola, Majid, Davis Wittenburg and Santosh Maryala winning gold by a wide margin. The Sprint Medley team of Davis, Majid, Ola, and Vidhur placed 2nd, and the 4x400m relay of Karthik Yagnamurthy, Charles Katona, Ryan Nartey, and Adam Gorka wrapped up the track events, winning their heat and placing 4th overall. In the field, an East Brunswick no-height left the door open for Majid and Javier Santiago to win the pole vault. Joe Carlson and Danny O'Grady placed 2nd in the shot put, and the high jump relay of Dante Bailey and Amit Vankadhara also placed second. In the novice division Sharan Shankar and JC Martinez Peralta dominated the shot put, winning gold. Karol Porbeni, Amir Brown, Eric Li, and Jordan Folkes placed 2nd in the novice 4x200m. The Vikings placed 2nd and 3rd in the novice 4x800m in an exciting photo finish between Daniel Zheng and Eric Wang, with just .01 separating the teams which also featured Arunmozhi Kannan, Pranav Perumal, Jake Inguardi, Shraavan Kandikounder, Rudra Gohil, and Sahil Sheth. At the end of the night the Vikings brought home a total of 40 medals! The team will have a tune-up meet in Princeton on Wednesday night before they look to defend their State Relays title on Sunday.
The South Brunswick Boys' Winter Track Team had an excellent showing at the GMC Relays Championship on Saturday (1/11), winning the team title by 26 points over 2nd place East Brunswick. The Distance Medley set the tone early with an impressive win. Josh Gumber provided a strong lead off leg, Adam Gorka and Archit Myadam would help take the lead, and Vidhur Polam ran a blazing 4:31 1600m anchor leg for the win. Next, the shuttle hurdle team of Majid Howard-Baker, Ola Porbeni, Greg Williams, and Wan Ye ran a strong race for a 2nd place finish. The 4x200m relay then blew away the competition with Ola, Majid, Davis Wittenburg and Santosh Maryala winning gold by a wide margin. The Vikings won their 3rd straight freshman title at the Egg Invitational Meet in Toms River this past Monday (12/30). Karol Porbeni led the way, coming home with three silvers and one gold medal. Karol finished 2nd in the 55m dash and 55m hurdles, and placed first in the 300m dash. He also led off the 2nd place 4x200m relay with Russell Tsao, David Sananes, and Matt Gorman. The distance medley team of Nick Johnson (1200m), Diego Marcelo (400m), Jigar Patel (800m), and Aman Shrivastava (1600m) placed first in the distance medley. The Vikings locked up the championship in the 1000m where they placed 1-2-3-5 (Aman, Nick, Jigar, and Rohan Dalal.) Other medals were won by Russell in the high jump (3rd), David and Diego in the 600m (3rd and 4th), and Christian Farhat in the shot put (6th).

Ola Porbeni brought home 3 golds, once again winning the 55m dash and winning 55 meter hurdles in a school record breaking time of 7.60 seconds. Ola also led off the gold medal winning 4x200m relay team to a convincing victory, along with Majid Howard-Baker, Davis Wittenburg, and Adam Gorka. In the high jump, Dante Bailey had a big 6'4" jump to win the event. The Vikings dominated the Novice division as well, with Sharon Shankar winning the shot put, Rushil Balakumar winning the pole vault with a pr of 11'0", Owen Capell winning the 800m, and the 4x400m relay of Charles Katona, Randy Adongo, Eric Li, and Jordan Folkes winning gold. Javier Santiago, Santosh Maryala, Karthik Yagnamurthy, Wan Ye, and Karol Porbeni also brought home individual medals. The Vikings also placed in the varsity 4x800m (6th) and Novice 4x200m (2nd).
