2023-2024
January
As part of our fitness unit students have be participating in POUND fitness to strengthen their coordination, improve physical fitness and enhance rhythmic skills. POUND® was created not just as a workout geared towards kids, but a MOVEMENT that aims to change the concept of health and fitness for today's youth. The program fuses movement and music to improve focus, coordination, physical fitness and teamwork skills for “Rockstars in Training,” ages 6-12. We are very proud of our Greenbrook rockstars!!
As part of our fitness unit we have been discussing sometimes vs. anytime foods. Students in grades 3-5 have been working to identify these foods by looking at real food labels. Classes created their own lists of sometimes vs. anytime foods. (Anytime foods being healthy foods that we can eat every day and sometimes foods being foods that we should try to stay away from and not eat daily).
Students in grades K-2 have also been working with sometimes vs. anytime foods and understanding that foods provide us with energy and nutrients. The activity to the left is a fun video students can try at home demonstrating healthy vs. unhealthy foods that we did in class as a warm up.
As part of our fitness unit students in grades 3-5 have been learning about components of Health Related Fitness. We have been focusing on 4 out of the 5 components. These include:
Cardiovascular Endurance
Muscular Strength
Muscular Endurance
Flexibility
We have been discussing how we can improve or work to enhance these components of fitness through exercises and different sports/activities.
In grades K-2 we have been working to understand what happens in our bodies when we exercise. During one of our new favorite games, Octopus Tag, we discussed how we are strengthening our hearts. As we run around, our heart begins to beat faster and our breathing increases.
February
To kick off February, students have been working on Jump Rope skills. Classes discussed the benefits of jumping rope and the fact that it is a life long skill. Students have been working on singles, doubles, and various beginner, intermediate and advanced tricks and jumps. We are so proud of their hard work, determination, and progress in achieving this tough skill.
**If your child would like a jump rope that they can keep to take home and practice with, please let us know and we would be happy to send one home with your child.**
To close out February, students have begun a hand volleying and striking unit. Students in grades K-2 will be working on foundational hand volleying skills. These skills include attempting consecutive hits, rallying with a partner, and directing an object to a target. Students in grades 3-5 will be working to demonstrate lead up volley skills that would be used in a regulation volleyball game. Students will be introduced to underhand striking, setting, bump passing, and serving.
March
March began will the continuation of our hand volleying and striking unit. 3rd-5th graders worked their way up to play modified volleyball games using regulation volleyball scoring and rotation. Student athletes learned 4 different kinds of hand volleying skills. These included the bump pass, set pass, underhand serve and overhand serve. In the photo to the left you can see a group of 4th grade students strategizing before a point.
K-2nd graders finished out this unit by working together to play modified keep it up games over a real net. Students needed to work together to track, pass, and strike the balloon over their team's net. Students worked to communicate, react, and advance the balloon to their opponents side. We had a lot of fun in this unit and we are very proud of all the progress that students made.
April
Beginning at the end of March into April, students began working on striking with an implement. We discussed how there are many sports where athletes strike with an implement including golf, tennis, cricket, pickle ball, hockey, baseball/softball, etc. Students learned the vocabulary for equipment used in racket sports and were taught the proper beginner grip to quickly transition from forehand to backhand.
Students in grades K-2 worked on balancing an object with a paddle or noodle, demonstrating ball control skills with a balloon or implement, and even worked up to modified rally games.
Students at the 3rd-5th grade level worked on developing ball control, forehands, backhands, and how to bounce the ball and strike it to start a rally. All students had the opportunity to use foam USTA modified tennis balls when working on skills. They worked up to playing modified rally games with classmates using paddles over a net.
We are very proud of the hard work, dedication. and progress that students demonstrated throughout our striking with an implement unit!

Basketball
Students in all grades worked on foundational basketball skills such as ball handling/dribbing, passing, and shooting. Students in grades 3-5th worked on lead up grames and offense/defense. We discussed the different scenarios of when to use one type of pass as opposed to another, how to control your dribble and protect the ball, and proper positioning on offense and defense.
