Activities
Each week is centered around encountering Jesus, encountering community, and having fun. We like to think of the phrase Jesus prayed “on earth as it is in heaven,” hoping to have activities reflective of that phrase. With this in mind, we strive to have an “unplugged” week, away from the noise and distractions of life and just enjoying being with God and one another.
Encountering Jesus
We strive for every camper to encounter Jesus. Related activities include:
Bible Teaching
Engaging lessons that are biblically based, rich in application, and centered around the spiritual theme for the week
Reflection Activities
A way of reaching students of different learning styles through unique activities directly related to the spiritual theme
Journal Time
Reflection through guided scripture, prayer, and questions
Small Groups
Smaller guided breakouts that lend themselves to vulnerability and sharing
Worship
Acknowledging that God is divine through singing, scripture reading, prayer and other means
Encountering Community
We strive for every camper to feel loved and valued not only by God, but also each other. Campers will spend time building relationships with one another. Related activities include:
Swimming
Card games
Music
Skit, chant, or song creation
Team activities
Gaga ball
Hang out time
Having Fun
Fun is an adjective we hope is always at the top of the list when people describe camp. While fun activities vary, they may include:
Water activities
Sporting activities
Large group games
Theme days
Challenge activities
Nature exploration
Activities based on interest (arts and crafts, cooking, songwriting, reading)
Safety First
Encounter's safety plan includes child protection training, as well as staff screening through background checks, interviews and references. A certified lifeguard, nurse, and CPR-trained personnel will be on-site during the session. Our goal is for parents to feel confident with their children spending a safe week with us.
COVID-19 protocols, if necessary, will be shared closer to the start of camp. As a general rule, Encounter staff will follow recommendations from the State of Louisiana and the CDC that are in effect for June 2024.
Fabulous Food
Experienced volunteers prepare healthy, delicious, home-cooked meals for Encounter's campers. Meals are kid/teen-friendly and well-balanced, featuring fresh fruits and vegetables. Encounter staff adhere to proper cleanliness standards, making for a top-notch culinary experience at camp.

Contacting Campers at Camp
If you need to reach your camper while at camp, for example due to a family emergency, please call the South Baton Rouge Church of Christ office at 225 927-4673.
Campers love receiving mail while at camp! We highly encourage you to bring any letters and packages for your camper with you to check-in on Sunday. Staff will be present to collect mail for you. If you wish, you may mark letters and packages with a particular day of week, and we will deliver them according to your instructions.
Location, Check-in & Check-out
You may check your camper in from 4:30-6 pm on the Sunday at the start of camp. You may pick your camper up starting at 8 am on Friday, 6/21/2024. All campers must depart no later than 10 am.
We recommend the route described below when driving from Baton Rouge.
Detailed Directions from Baton Rouge
From Baton Rouge, take I-12 East, and take the Walker exit (Exit 15). From there, head north, and then turn right on Florida Blvd (US 190). After a mile and a half, take a left onto N Corbin Rd (LA-449 N). Follow LA-449 N into Pine Grove as seen below. After taking a right onto LA-16 and then a quick left back on to LA-449, you will take a right onto Shiloh Baptist Church Rd (across from NAPA Auto Parts store) and will pass a USPS Post Office on your right. You will follow this road, passing Shiloh Church on your left, until you reach Lion King Retreat Center. Please follow signs for Encounter to check in. Some mapping services may incorrectly route you to Bluff Rd off of LA-16. This is incorrect as this is a private, service road.
Encounter will take place at the Lion King Retreat Center*
*Encounter is sponsored by the South Baton Rouge Church of Christ and is not an official function of Lion King Ministries.
