Hanna Wechlser, an Auschwitz Holocaust Survivor, spoke to our 9th grade class at SBHS. Hanna is one of the last survivors of the Holocaust and wanted to share her message with our students. Her message of being kind, respectful, and courteous to others was portrayed throughout her story. Hanna came from a wealthy family in Poland and went into hiding prior to entering the ghettos at Auschwitz. At a very young age, her mother made it her mission to protect her from inside the camps. After liberation, she was reunited with her family.

The 9th grade students have also read Elie Wiesel's book, Night. They identified and discussed similar themes in the two survivor stories and recognized the overall message as to always remember the Holocaust so history will never repeat itself.

Some of our students (multi-grades) participated in a community service/character development project. Major Bill White, a 104 year old WWII veteran of the Marine Corps, served 30 years in the USMC. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He has been keeping scrapbooks to remember and celebrate the most important and meaningful events in his life. It was requested for Valentines to be sent to Major White so he can make a new scrapbook. Our students made the most beautiful and heartfelt cards to wish Major White a Happy Valentine's Day and to thank him for his service.

As a result of this activity, the students did much more than make cards. They learned about military service and distinguished honors, such as the Purple Heart medal. They were involved in discussions about WWII, and many students shared stories of family members who are military veterans and active duty personnel. Additionally, important character traits such as respect, kindness, and gratitude were reinforced.

Speed Publishing! Middle school students prepared for, and participated in a quick interview simulation during which they had to concisely present their independent novel as if they were the author pitching it to a publisher. Students in both 7th and 8th grade, general and special education, were combined so that students could practice interpersonal skills as well as learn about what fellow students in other classes are reading.

After learning about text structures, these fourth graders were put in groups and given topics. They had to come up with a scenario about that topic for each of the five text structures. They even did some research for accuracy on their topics. They presented their projects to their classmates. They were engaged and asked questions and gave compliments to their peers who presented.
