Course Description: Intro to Skill/Technical Science Prerequisite: None
This course introduces students to the various kinds of woods used in industry and offers experience in using selected woodworking tools. Students design and construct 3 or more projects. Correct and safe use of tools and equipment is emphasized. As students advance, they focus on learning the terminology to use power tools successfully, developing skills to safely use these tools in the workshop and becoming familiar with various kinds of wood-finishing materials. This course costs $25 for materials.
Purpose Statement:
This is an elective class with the purpose of developing a basic understanding of woodworking. The class is to be focused on developing your creative and problem solving skills by combining woodworking with design. As you learn about safety, tools, and the machinery of a wood shop you will learn designs, properties of woods, and how parts fit together. A solid base knowledge about hand tools and machinery is given and each is demonstrated on its operation with a focus on safety as the top concern.
Expectations of Students:
Conduct themselves in a safe manner at all times.
Wear safety glasses and appropriate clothing at all times
Have a positive attitude that reflects integrity and service to others.
Be respectful to other students, staff, and teachers.
Promptly participate in all learning activities.
Use school property for what it is intended for, and do not damage or waste items.
Classroom Policies and Procedures:
Class begins when the bell rings. You should be seated at your assigned work table so attendance can be taken and be able to listen to any assignment/shop instructions.
Clean up is ten minutes before the end of the hour. All students are expected to participate in cleaning up their immediate work area and performing an assigned cleanup job.
Students are not to gather at the door waiting for the bell to ring.
Students are not to leave the classroom without permission.
Students are to use the bathroom in the shop or between class periods.
Attendance Policy:
Regular attendance and punctuality is very important; students with good attendance do better. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for missed assignments due to any type of absent. Daily objective points are the responsibility of the student to make up. Students can make up daily points with a wood working related article summary. If a student’s situation results in an extended excused absents please make prior arrangements for assignments.
Cell Phone and Electronics Policy:
Cell phones, tablets and laptop computers are not allowed. Personal cell phones will be placed on my desk, no exceptions. Headphones are not allowed at any time. Any use of these devices will result in the device being taken. Parents or legal guardian will have to retrieve the device.
No photography, due to the digital age we live with today. A photograph may result in bullying by posting on social media sites; violating a student’s right to privacy.
Safety:
Safety is the utmost importance and a primary focus within the shop. Students will learn shop safety rules and procedures, and will need to complete a safety test. If a student is seen to violate a safety rule a warning will be given for the first offence. A second offence may result in a review of shop safety procedures and the student will need to retake the safety test before coming back out onto the shop floor. A student who continues to violate safety rules may be referred to administration for removal from the course. In a shop setting one student’s actions may not just endanger oneself but also those in the near vicinity.
Safety Glasses:
Safety glasses are not an option and will be worn at all times. This is a State Law Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. Students will be given a pair of safety glasses to use during the course. If the initial pair of safety glasses are damaged beyond safe use or lost, it is expected of the student to replace them at his or her own cost.

Full cover shoes, full covering shirt, and full covering pants.
Grading Procedure:

When a student is absent the daily objective points can be recovered with a one page written summary of a topic related journal article.
