This project invited a group of new media art students at the university of the west of Scotland: Lewis Currie, Michael Laverty, John Montgomery, Stephen Whyte, Andrew Anderson, Antonio Fucito, Jasmin Smith, Lauren Elgar. Through regular discussions, the group gained a depth of historical knowledge around Paisley School of Arts and translated it into their visions of arts education. The use of virtual reality also inspired the participating artist-students and their artworks reveal insights of arts education from the context of Paisley and from the perspective of artists in education.
Lewis Currie
This work was produced to "reflect on our ideal vision for a workspace" for the imagined Paisley School of Arts. Lewis goes "walks around the park [Rouken Glen Park]" to get inspired in his art and he used his experience as a central idea to create this work.
Michael Laverty
This work was produced as a digital content to be part of an online open day at the Paisley School of Arts. Michael focused on presenting different areas in art and design but also different styles to demonstrate "an interesting mix of cultures."
John Montgomery
John created this work adapted "a link between Paisley and Paisley School of Arts, with University of the West of Scotland and Ayrshire" as a central theme. His historical research revealed that "the monks of Paisley Abbey built the Abbey of Saint Mary of Crossraguel in Maybole" and he imagined that the existence of Paisley School of Arts would have inspired new art schools in Scotland.
Stephen Whyte
Stephen's vision of an ideal art school is a historical institution that has witnessed and contributed to movements and evolutions of arts. Therefore, each room within the school's building represents key historical moments and his design includes "painting studio, textile and fabric studio, furniture workshop, music studio, acting theatre and new media studio."
Andrew Anderson
This work represents the idea of what's cutting edge and trendy in the art education, and used the feeling of "welcoming yet overwhelming" to reflect today's and near future's on-campus experiences. In Andrew's vision of Paisley School of Arts, traditional art studio co-exists alongside a virtual reality studio and a hybrid studio where digital immersion and nature meets.
Antonio Fucito
Antonio's work aimed to produce a spherical video tour of the beautiful surroundings of Paisley School of Arts as a more familiar style of tourist digital content. The video includes Paisley Abbey, Paisley Town Hall, Oakshaw Trinity Church. Barrhead Road, Paisley Thread Mill Museum, Paisley Waterfall and the historical site of the Paisley Government School of Design.
Jasmin Smith
This imagined VR tour of Paisley School of Arts focuses on "student centred education, student well being and inclusivity." Jasmin used her own insight of being a university student feeling "unsure or anxious about starting off in a new surrouding and designed unique rooms for students to "destress and study out with their classes" and to "feel comfortable in an academic setting allowing them to further express themselves."
Lauren Elgar
Lauren's vision of Paisley School of Arts is the school that offers facilities, helps improve students' mental health and provide new opportunities, therefore "encourages students to stay longer on campus." The work itself illustrates a student's commute to the school, "nature room" and its gallery space.
