Teaching Self-Regulation

"Our thoughts and cognition cannot be separated from our emotions, and harnessing one's emotions, not suppressing or controlling, in service of learning and growth must be the goal.  Learning is a relational activity - we learn with and from others and experiencing caring, supportive relationships is central to health development."

What Is Self-Regulation?

Self-regulation is our conscious effort to notice our internal states (e.g., body sensations, thoughts, feelings), assess the situation we are in, and adapt to that situation. It involves the ability to modulate our reactions and be intentional with our actions.

Why Are Regulation Skills Important?

Self-regulation lays the foundation for our wellbeing. By teaching children self-regulation skills, we develop their ability to effectively navigate the complexity of emotions, especially in difficult situations. When we equip children with regulation skills, we create a ripple effect of harmony in our community.

Five Week Self-Regulation Module

The five week self-regulation module introduces students to the basic concepts and tools of self-regulation.  Students learn to notice their internal state, decide if it’s appropriate for the situation, and choose a regulation strategy Each lesson plan supports five days of instruction with resources to use all week long.
