The AVID Mission Statement
AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.
The AVID program uses the W.I.C.O.R. curriculum which focuses on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. These skills are crucial for effective learning in high school as well as college readiness.
The AVID tutorials are an essential component of the program that is modeled after college study groups. Tutorials are conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays with the facilitation of our AVID tutors who are college students completing their undergraduate studies. Students present, participate, collaborate, and engage in discussion all while using the inquiry process that drives their learning.
The AVID binder is an essential tool that is considered a trademark of all AVID students. Students carry a physical binder every day containing all of their material from each of their core classes. It is organized by compartmentalized area of each divider. It includes their weekly planners with a color-coded list all of their due dates for assignments and tests as well as their activities and appointments. AVID students are also required to have their class materials which is included in their binder grade as well keeping their backpacks tidy and clean. AVID binders are checked and graded weekly.
Note-taking has been a hallmark of the AVID program since its early days in 1980. AVID Focused Note-taking has now become another trademark of the AVID curriculum which is used across the curriculum on a national (and international) level.
Research studies that have been replicated and validated over time have shown that student-produced notes increase academic achievement reflected in higher grades and test scores. AVID Focused Note-taking is a research-based approach developed and trademarked by the AVID program. It consists of 5 stages that leads students through their academic class content with a concentration on an Essential Question that drives their learning. Each stage allows students to interact with the learning material and fires the critical thinking that clarifies their understanding and allows application of the knowledge and skills of the content. AVID students who remain in the 4-year AVID elective refine their note-taking skills and are able to sustain this skill that is essential to their success at the college level.
In addition to teaching skills for college readiness, the AVID program provides students with vital life skills that reinforces the importance of being independent, intuitive, and employable. The San Gorgonio AVID program emphasizes the area of the professional skills needed for success outside of the academic arena: communication with peers/teachers/employers, behaviors expected in a workplace setting, basic financial literacy, awareness of government/state policies and/or laws that affect student lives, goal a setting, leadership, navigating difficult situations, self-awareness, and much more. These are the skills that are necessary to develop students' ability to engage in their "career readiness and success in a global society"
