Second Step is the social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum that is taught at the elementary level in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. RCPA scholars receive SEL lesson instruction in their classroom by Mrs. Mirarchi, the school counselor. Social and emotional learning is based on five core competencies: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Relationship Skills, Social Awareness and Responsible Decision Making.
PBIS is a proactive approach that schools use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment. PBIS teaches students positive behavior strategies.
Riley College Prep Academy utilizes the PBIS system to address both appropriate and inappropriate behavioral choices. Three main rules guide behavior at RCPA:
Be Safe
Be Responsible
Be Respectful
These three rules can be applied to the different locations at the school site: office, cafeteria, classroom, hallway, restroom, playground, etc.
These rules can also apply at home. Students, think of ways you can be safe, responsible and respectful at home and in your community.
