The underutilization of technology in secondary education & professional development/suggestions for its improvement

PART I: Quantitative Data

Purpose: Identify the factors contributing to technology underutilization

Technology Factors Limiting UtilizationThis survey is intended to address the use of technology in educational environments. We appreciate you taking the time to answer questions relating to common concerns with technology implementation. Your feedback is important to help guide future planning.

Results:

Demographic Info

The majority of teachers that participated in this study have been teaching for 4-7 yrs.

Content Area

The majority of teachers that participated in this study were history teachers (33%), with ELA & Elective teachers showing significant representation (27%).

*Limitation: It would have been nice to obtain information on math teachers.

Technology Usage (Self-Assessment)

Most teachers concluded that they were only using minimal technology at school (61%).

Factors Limiting Technology

The majority of teachers cited "not knowing how to use technology" (Professional Development) as the most influencing factor limiting technology usage.
2 key additional factors that teachers referenced in limiting their technology usage were: "the availability of technology lesson plans" (Support) & "being afraid of losing control to technology in the classroom" (Management).

PART II: Mixed methods

Purpose: Provide moderation strategies to enhance teacher usage of technology in classes

Data Assessment Tool: Individual Team Google Sites (3 Total)

In an effort to help improve technology usage, moderation strategies were employed. One moderator from each participating group was tasked with sharing professional development in the creation of a Google Site for their respective team. This moderator was also tasked with assuring teacher accountability in that all participants were contributing proof of technology usage in their classrooms as evidenced by the work being uploaded to each Google Site.
