We partner with colleges across Washington State to co-create inclusive, equity-driven systems that support student entry, success, and completion. From policy to practice, we center student voices and empower staff with tools, training, and collaboration.
OLYMPIA, Wash. — To better support students on their journey from entry to graduation, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges has selected six community and technical colleges to participate in the Early Adopter Advising Technology Implementation Project. Funded by the State Board’s Student Success Center and Jobs for the Future, the colleges will lead the transformation to more personalized and proactive advising for all students.
The colleges, selected through a competitive process, are:
Bates Technical College
Edmonds College
Pierce College
Spokane Community College
Spokane Falls Community College
Whatcom Community College
These colleges will collaboratively explore how technology can enhance advising. Students rely on advising to choose programs, register for classes, and access resources. The goal is to help students stay on track with seamless systems and more support.
Staff from across college departments will start by looking at students’ current experience as they tailor practices, models and technology to best fit students’ needs. Lessons learned during the project will be shared throughout Washington’s 34 community and technical college system.
Amunoo Tembo, the State Board’s Student Success Center policy associate who leads the project, said, “This project represents a bold step forward in transforming advising to better support student success.”
The project is anticipated to wrap up its work Oct. 30, 2026. Total grant award: $270,500.
Across Washington’s community and technical colleges, teams are reimagining the student experience—from onboarding and advising to career exploration and success coaching. Each quarter, we’ll highlight colleges doing exceptional work that can inspire and inform others.
Explore this quarter’s featured innovations:
Green River College is implementing a proactive, holistic advising model with the support of Navigate360. Their work includes aligning advising teams with new Areas of Interest, mapping student milestones, and integrating career exploration through First Year Experience courses. This redesign is grounded in equity and informed by student feedback.
LCC has replaced one-size-fits-all orientations with pathway-specific New Student Advising (NSA) sessions and created “Red Devil Welcome Days” to build student confidence before day one. These efforts focus on trust, personalization, and proactive support—especially for first-generation students.
North Seattle has scaled a comprehensive advising model aligned with meta-majors and supported by the Starfish platform. Advisors use early alerts, default education plans based on program maps, and intentional communication campaigns to ensure students stay on track and feel supported.
