Remote Instruction
Given the possibility that communities may experience spikes in COVID-19 cases at any point during the school year, which may prompt short or long-term school closures, our district has developed a learning model and schedule that can continue as is in a fully remote environment.
Student schedules will remain the same whether instruction is in person or remote so that students do not encounter conflicts wherein live lessons for different subjects are offered simultaneously.
Remote learning opportunities for students will include a greater emphasis on live instruction, with teachers finding ways to provide live instruction and lessons to students. Teachers will ensure that their students are directly engaged with them and their class peers in experiential learning on a regular basis.
To ensure high-quality remote learning experiences, we will standardize the use of a single online learning platform, to the extent possible, and develop a common, coordinated set of guidelines for teachers to follow when using the platform with students. Faculty will be available both in-person and via email/student learning system platform for questions and support (either live or through email guidance).
The Sayville School District's Remote Instruction Plan complies with all guidance from:
• NYSED Recovering, Rebuilding, and Renewing: The Spirit of New York’s School
• Department of Health Interim Guidance for In-person Instruction at Pre-K to Grade 12 Schools During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency
Like in our in-person instruction plan, Sayville Schools will perform the following within our remote instruction plan:
FAPE
All IEPs will be followed to the greatest extent possible in terms of mandates. The district is committed to offering its full continuum of services. Flexibility will be provided with respect to the mode, manner, group size, frequency, duration, and location of the services.
Parent Engagement
The Sayville UFSD is committed to providing meaningful parent engagement in the parent’s preferred language or mode of communication regarding the provision of services to his/her child to meet the requirements of the IDEA. Further, we will maintain regular communication with the parents/guardians and other family members to ensure that they are engaged in their children’s education during the reopening process.
● The Committee on Preschool Special Education and the Committee on Special Education will continue to convene via the Google Meets platform in order to address parental concerns as well as review student progress toward goals. Meetings will be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon time and invitations will be provided in the family's native language.
● Prior Written Notices and IEPs will be provided in the family’s native language.
Collaboration with CSE on IEP Implementation
● The District administrators will continue to communicate with the administration of all CPSE and CSE special education programs and providers, including out of district schools.
● As always, the CPSE/CSE is available to meet to address concerns or issues.
Necessary Accommodations, Modifications, Supplementary Aids and Services, and Technology
● In the event of full virtual instruction, a variety of online programs and instructional tools will be readily available. These programs incorporate individualized data collection and progress monitoring as well as provide a high level of student engagement.
● Teachers will provide modifications and accommodations as per the IEP.
● All students will be provided Chromebooks in order to access Google classrooms, instructional tools, and online programs.
● The district consults with assistive technology specialists who are available to support teachers, parents and students with any assistive technology needs that may arise.
Remote Attendance
Daily attendance will be recorded by all faculty and staff for each student and will be reported in Infinite Campus even while receiving instruction in a remote learning environment, according to SED guidance. All faculty and staff will ensure substantive daily interaction (daily remote instruction, online participation, phone calls, emails, or other activities) with students; and clearly communicating information about instructional plans with parents and guardians. All attendance policies will remain in place during remote learning.
Certification
All coursework will continue to be taught by appropriately certified teachers while the remote instruction plan is implemented.
APPR, Observation/School Visits, and SLOs
As required by the New York State Education Department, the Sayville School District's APPR Plan will be fully implemented during the 2020-21 school year while the remote instruction plan is implemented. Each educator’s evaluation must include at least one required student performance measure.
Observations/School Visits will be conducted within our remote instruction model, documented in OASYS, and submitted to the State Education Department according to the Sayville School District’s APPR plan and Education Law 3012-d.
