Renovation Plan

Dear Friend of the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle,

For nearly a century, the Japanese Institute of Sawtelle has endured as a symbol of the Japanese American community’s resilient presence in West Los Angeles, as well as a cultural touchstone for many of us who over the years have attended or sent our children to the Japanese language school or have gathered with friends and neighbors in the community hall and taken part in the sports and cultural activities there.

While the legacy of JIS is strong, the facilities housing the Institute need our help. It has been more than 70 years since the Institute has seen any significant structural upgrades and improvements to the grounds, classrooms, auditorium, and communal gathering spots.

Fortunately, with generous commitments from the Philip and Masako Togo Kasloff Foundation and the Terasaki Family Foundation, we are well on our way to being able to renovate our beloved JIS, bring it up to modern-day communication and technological standards, and restore its luster as an exemplar of our community’s heritage, and its contributions to the cultural life of our city. With the help of the Philip and Masako Togo Kasloff and Terasaki Family foundations, we are closer than ever to making our long-desired improvements a reality.

But we still need additional funding. We now need your help. Let us honor the legacy of both our Institute and our forebears who created and sustained it until now. Donate today, and help us to forge a new future for generations to come.
