私たちの使命は、ウエストロサンゼルスのソーテル・ジャパンタウンにおいて、日本語教育を推進するとともに、日本および日系アメリカ人の文化・伝統・歴史を継承し、地域社会に貢献することです。

2025年に創立100周年を迎える当学院は、日系一世・二世の歴史を次世代へとつなぐ架け橋として重要な役割を果たす一方、国際化の進展により日本語を外国語として学びたいと願う多くの生徒たちのニーズにも応えています。継承語クラスと日本語学習者クラスをバランスよく設け、それぞれに合ったアプローチで日本語教育を行っています。

毎週土曜日には、3歳児の幼稚部から18歳の高等部までの生徒を対象に、多様化する社会情勢に柔軟に対応しながら、きめ細やかな配慮をもってクラスを運営しています。スピーチコンテスト、習熟度別の漢字指導、各種試験対策など、学習面のサポートも充実しています。

また、日本文化に親しむ機会として、運動会、節分、ひな祭り、こどもの日、書初めなどの年間行事を行っており、これまでにはタナカ・ファームズやマンザナー強制収容所への遠足も実施してきました。

さらに現在は、平日に「Terasaki Japanese Immersion Preschool（テラサキ・ジャパニーズ・イマージョン・プリスクール）」を開設し、自他の文化を理解し尊重する心を育み、日系コミュニティーに貢献できる継承日本語学習者の育成を目指しています。

Japanese Institute of Sawtelle (JIS) is located in West Los Angeles, “Sawtelle Japantown.” Our mission is to promote Japanese language education and contribute to the local community through the preservation and transmission of Japanese and Japanese American culture, traditions, and history.

As we celebrate our 100th anniversary in 2025, JIS continues to serve as a vital bridge connecting the legacy of first- and second-generation Japanese Americans to future generations. In response to an increasingly globalized world, we offer both heritage language and Japanese as a foreign language classes, providing well-balanced and customized approaches to meet the diverse needs of our students.

Our classes are held every Saturday for students aged 3 to 18. We strive to operate with flexibility and care, adapting to the changing needs of families in our community. Our program includes speech contests, kanji instruction, and preparation for various proficiency exams. To deepen cultural understanding, we also host traditional events such as Sports Day, Setsubun, Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day), Children’s Day, and Kakizome (New Year’s calligraphy). Students have also participated in field trips to destinations such as Tanaka Farms and the Manzanar National Historic Site.

In addition, we recently launched the Terasaki Japanese Immersion Preschool, a weekday Japanese immersion program. This preschool is committed to nurturing cultural awareness and mutual respect from an early age, while supporting and strengthening the Japanese American community for the future.
