Looking for resources to help you work with Efrén Divided in class? Mr. Cisneros compiled resources from many different sources at this link. I've identified lessons from his site and across the internet that I find most applicable to a high school setting below.
This set of lessons is intended to help students discuss and understand migration. Each lesson includes guiding and reflective questions. On the last page of the student guide, there are three extension ideas that could be used to sharpen student's research skills.
This document is a little cumbersome to read due to a few formatting choices. If does, however, have several activities that could be lesson starters for higher-level readers, some questions that could develop into socratic seminar discussions with further research, and a few activities playing with the multiple languages in the book and in our everyday lives.
If you haven't used teachingbooks.net yet, I recommend checking it out when you are getting ready to teach a book for the first time. There are typically numerous resources for each text, including text complexity information, author interviews, book guides, and lessons.
