MEDIA ALERT FOR March 2, 2024

Calling One and All to the Boca De Oro Festival

Santa Ana, California — the Boca de Oro Festival returns on Saturday, March 2, 2024 with a multiverse of dynamic live performances, poetry readings, and presentations. Inspired by 2024’s comic-book theme—The Hero in the Journey—the Festival invites everyone to see heroes among us and find that each of us can be the heroes in our own stories. Boca de Oro will rock Downtown Santa Ana with performances by hundreds of student groups and powerhouse poetry presentations, including keynote speaker Rachelle Cruz, poet and author of God's Will for Monsters (American Book Award, 2018) and the comic-book text, Experiencing Comics: An Introduction to Reading, Discussing and Creating Comics. In addition, Fernando Del Rosario, founder of Creative Aid, will share about his art and how a team of designers have continued to save and support local businesses with the heroic creative work during and beyond the pandemic.

Returning to the festival as curators this year are the dynamic duo of Brenda Vaca, Xicana poet, author, and publisher, and Donato Martinez, professor of English composition, Literature, and Creative Writing at Santa Ana College. Over a dozen poets will present amongst student performances in venues and on outdoor stages throughout downtown. Also, artist and festival curator Steven Homestead will lead a group of writers to create poems live for festival-goers inspired by the theme.

Festival co-founder Robyn MacNair, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator for SAUSD, shares: "Boca de Oro is a vibrant, creative journey that brings together the community and artists in a celebration of storytelling and expression. This year, we're especially excited to work in collaboration with DTSA Artwalk, Logan Crow and team, as well as our Santa Ana City partners through an artists grant." With over 30 different performances from Santa Ana Unified Visual and Performing Arts departments from across the city, Boca de Oro shines a light on every hero’s journey.
