Wind Ensemble is a competitively-auditioned ensemble of a select group of instrumental music students who thrive on the challenge of difficult wind literature. The type of literature performed is designed for an ensemble of fewer than 40 players primarily focused on traditional and contemporary repertoire. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition and refinement of more advanced instrumental techniques. Student involvement in concert and performance activities will be part of the assessment process for this course. Periodically there are special events, rehearsals or concerts during non-school hours. Participation in such activities is an essential extension of the requirements. All students will perform solos, duets, or other small ensembles at the Wisconsin District and State Solo and Ensemble festivals each year. The Percussion Ensemble is made up of freshman through senior percussionists. During the 1st trimester, students will work heavily through the marching band music and drill. After 1st trimester, we split time between percussion ensemble work, individual proficiencies and concert band preparation. They will perform traditional concerts, pep band performances, Madrigal Ensembles and Show Bands. (NOTE: In order to be considered for Show Band, you must participate in Marching Band.) All members will perform solos, duets, and other small ensembles at the Wisconsin District and State Solo and Ensemble festivals each year.

Beginning Band is made up of all students interested in learning the basics of woodwind, brass or percussion. Student involvement in concert and performance activities will be part of the assessment process for this course. Students will be required to show proficiency in basic instrumental technique, scales and music theory. Periodically there are special events, rehearsals or concerts during non-school hours. Participation in such activities is an essential extension of the requirements. Upon completion of this course, students will merge into concert band for the remainder of the school year. The marching band supports school events by attending all home football games, represents the community by participating in numerous area parades and competes in many field competitions during the fall. Marching band does have a camp and rehearsals prior to the start of the school year (early August). Once school begins, there are 7 full Monday night and 7 full Thursday night rehearsals. The marching season begins in April and continues through the first trimester.

This one trimester course includes the basic fundamentals of musicianship, theory, musical materials, harmony, analysis, composition, basic terminology, basic keyboard training, ear-training and sight-singing procedures rooted in the Western Tonal Music Tradition. It also integrates interval studies and identification with simple melodic and harmonic dictation. A basic knowledge of the piano keyboard being able to read standard western notation systems are recommended.
