To provide students with an introduction to the field of horticulture and the basic skills required for employment within this field. Horticulture is a branch of agriculture that studies the science of growing, managing, and harvesting plants.
Student performance is evaluated by participation and quality of classwork submitted. Level of participation is assessed by both teacher and student. No participation credit will be given if student is absent. Classwork will include lab activities, worksheets, readings and projects. Classwork is due at the beginning of the following day’s class. Late work will not be accepted.
There is a well documented correlation between positive attendance and student performance. It is the responsibility of the student to be present for this class. If a student is absent, the student will only receive credit for the work missed if the student completes and submits an article review on a current horticulture issue. The chosen article requires approval from the teacher.
It is critical that both teacher and parent/guardian be responsible for communicating information that you or I may want or need. I prefer that you contact me via email. I am also accessible by phone, however, it is more difficult to return a phone call than an email. Communication occurs in various forms. Progress reports and report cards are considered communication. The numerical grades and the comments teachers put on progress reports and report cards are informative and often provide accurate information in a brief format. Parents should attend open house, attend teacher/parent conference night, and email and/or call me with any questions or concerns as soon as they arise.
This course is a field course. Students will be outside utilizing the campus, garden, and greenhouse throughout the year in all weather. Students must have proper footwear and clothing suitable for these tasks.
