Course Overview:
Living Environment is a high school life science course designed to help students learn about various aspects of the biological world by experimenting with, studying, and caring for living things, and the environments that support them. These experiences occur both in the classroom and the lab. We will explore the nature of science, characteristics of living things, cells and the molecules of life, homeostasis, disease, ecology, genetics, evolution, and human impact on the environment in this course.
What materials do I need to bring to class?
You need to bring the following materials to science class:
Your CHROMEBOOK .... so important
your science packet (when we are working on one)
your homework or lab (if it is due)
blue or black pen or pencil
A science binder (for those of you who prefer to keep organized using a binder)
Assignments are posted in Google Classroom. Please e-mail me with any questions
How is my average in science calculated?
I will be grading your work based on a total points system. Your grade will be figured by taking the total number of points that could have possibly been earned and dividing that number by the total number of points you have earned. Points are assigned based on the length of time/effort needed to complete the assignment. In general, homework will be 10 points each, labs will be between 20 – 40 points each, and tests will be based on the length of the unit, usually around 55 – 65 points each.
At the end of each quarter, your lab grade will be calculated as 20% of your final class average for that quarter. It is important you keep up with your labs as well.
There is a regents exam in June for this class. Each student must have 1200 minutes or 20 hours of satisfactory lab time/work in order to take the regents exam. We calculate students time 4 times throughout the year. If students are absent often they may have to make up lab time on their own in order to take the regents. Please e-mail me if you have questions or concerns about the lab or regents eligibility.
HOMEWORK:
I rarely give homework. If students are not doing their work in class then it becomes homework. Late work is accepted until the 5 week mark. A precentage will be deducted based on how late and circumstances surrounding the late work. Please e-mail me with questions or if something cannot be done on time.
What is expected of me in class? I expect all of my students to…
Be prepared for class everyday.
Participate in a meaningful way in class activities and discussions.
Work safely in the lab by following the safety guidelines and by using good common sense.
Make up missed work as soon as possible. If you miss class for any reason you are expected to make up the work covered in class as well as the homework.
Be responsible!
Give your best effort! Finish all classwork in the time given to avoid homework.
Show respect and kindness at all times.
