REQUIRED PHYSICAL & HEALTH EDUCATION
To meet graduation requirements students must earn 1.5 credits of Physical Education (PE) and .5 credit of Health Education (HE).
Grade 9 Semester 1/2 Credit
Students will acquire information and skills in the development of healthy behaviors by exploring units in mental health, alcohol and other drugs, and reproductive health. Students will develop and utilize skills which encourage empowerment, informed decision-making, and safe behavior choices. Students will learn how to assess their current levels of fitness and, based on that knowledge, set individual goals and explore fitness programs. Emphasis will be on the health-related components of fitness. Students will explore, in activity and lab settings, the concepts needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Successful completion of this course will award .25 credit to the Physical Education Graduation Requirements and .25 credit to the Health Education Graduation Requirements.
Grade 11 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
Students will build on information learned in Introduction to Lifetime Wellness and learn how to develop positive health attitudes, behaviors, and self-advocacy skills. Areas of study will include stress management techniques, mental disorders, healthy and harmful relationships, drug abuse, and human sexuality education. Included will be the identification of community resources available in maintaining personal health and wellness. Information in this course is presented to encourage self-advocacy and proactive decision-making regarding personal health and wellness. Students will participate in physical activities for lifelong enjoyment and wellness. Activities will vary throughout the year depending on facilities and weather but may include independent and/or lifetime fitness. Successful completion of this course will award .25 credit to the Physical Education Graduation Requirements and .25 credit to the Health Education Graduation Requirements
PHYSICAL EDUCATION OPTIONS

Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
Students will explore the basic principles of athletic training and care and prevention of athletic injuries. This course will cover the analysis of common athletic injuries, including evaluation approaches, treatment techniques and preventative approaches. Students will be taught basic anatomy and physiology, rehabilitation techniques, bracing and taping techniques, as well as the basic fundamentals of Sports Medicine.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
Learn the knowledge and skills necessary to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical help arrives. Students will develop a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have an immediate EMS response, such as wilderness and remote environments. Students will also learn first aid skills that coaches, and other active participants, need to perform as the first link in the EMS system. Red Cross Certification can be obtained.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
This course starts students on a path to a potentially lifelong activity that reduces stress and enhances quality of life. Students will explore different styles of dance such as line, waltz, swing, fox trot, etc., while learning proper techniques. Students will choreograph their own dance routine.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
This course is for students who have an interest in serving as a student leader and want to go beyond an initial course experience to continue to pursue one of the Physical Education Options at a more advanced level. Students who have demonstrated exemplary, responsible behavior throughout the school, as well as in the physical education setting, will be considered. Applicants should have a strong desire to work with their peers. Students interested must complete an application and interview with the intended teacher prior to enrollment. Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
This course is designed to teach a variety of recreational activities geared towards lifelong fitness. Recreational Activities promotes a desire for physical fitness, lifetime physical activity, and healthy leisure time habits through individual activities, sports, and games. Activities such as badminton, pickleball, bocce, etc., will be explored with an emphasis on rules, strategies, and game play.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
Students will learn the options that they have to protect themselves through assertiveness, awareness, risk reduction, risk recognition, avoidance, and physical defense strategies. Basic and Advanced self-defense skills will be explored including self-defense techniques, multiple attackers, and in-depth prone defense strategies. The R.A.D. (Rape, Aggression, and Defense) curriculum will be followed.
YOGA
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
This course is designed to introduce students to the postures, breathing techniques, and relaxation methods of Yoga. Students will begin to experience the benefits of stretching, moving, and breathing as they relieve built up stress, and learn to relax. Students will learn a variety of styles and types of Yoga, have possible visits to local Yoga studios and develop their Yoga practice for lifelong wellness.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
Students will implement a fitness plan focused on strength and conditioning. This is a course for the motivated student who wants to improve his or her current fitness level. No experience necessary.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
This course is designed to teach a variety of team sports and invasion games such as flag football, ultimate frisbee, basketball, floor hockey, etc. which involves competition between teams of players. In-depth instruction in skill development, game play strategy, and officiating will occur.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisite: Introduction to Lifetime Wellness
This course will focus on popular games such as cricket, Tak-Raw, Tchoukball, net ball, and activities from around the World. Comparison will be made from games around the World to traditional games such as basketball, softball, and soccer played in the United States. Instruction in origin, technique, tactics, rules, participation, and competition will occur.

Prerequisite: Prior Approval Needed

The Physical Education/ ELO is designed to provide an opportunity for students to pursue a particular activity interest beyond what is offered in the subject area at CHS. The activity must be under the mentorship of a field professional. Students planning on enrolling in PE/ELO must complete the PE/ELO application PRIOR to the start of the activity. (A student can only receive a .25 credit of Physical Education credit through either PE/ELO OR CHS Sport per year.)
Seniors: Applications must be submitted and approved before the start of Semester 2.

R.O.P.E. (Reaching Our Potential in Education)
Grades 10, 11, 12 Semester 1 Credit
(1/2 credit as elective; 1/2 credit as P.E. credit)
Students will engage in rigorous outdoor activities to successfully demonstrate teamwork, community service, and wilderness survival skills. Students will participate in rock climbing, trail construction, backpacking, and other outdoor adventures. Fundraising events and four weekend trips (announced in advance) are required to pass the course. ROPE students will experience mental and physical challenges designed to bring out their personal best. Limited to 18 students a semester
CHS SPORT
Grade 11, 12 1/4 Credit
Juniors and seniors participating in a Concord High School sanctioned sport will receive .25 Physical Education credit because of their athletic involvement, if they complete the season in good standing. (A student can only receive a .25 credit of PE credit through either PE/ELO OR CHS Sport per year.)
