It is hard to believe that it is already October! Students have been working very hard on a variety of skills and topics. Here is an overview of what we are working on:
- Math: We have begun our multiplication unit. Students will learn how to multiply double digit numbers using: arrays, area models, and partial products. Ask your child to show you his/her new skills!
- Reading: We have been reading informational text with a focus on the Native Americans of New Hampshire. Students are working on close reading strategies, and using textual evidence to answer questions and support their thinking. In reading groups we will be reading Native American novels. Some titles we will read are: Soft Rain, The Sign of the Beaver, Squanto, Guests, and Children of the Longhouse.
- Writing: We have spent the beginning of the year gathering ideas in our writer's notebooks. Students have listened to several picture books and stories to provide inspiration for writing. We have worked on writing a well-written paragraph about the "truth behind grown-up rules", and will soon be working on writing longer narratives.
- Science: Science class has been all about our land's changing landscape. How do erosion, weathering, and natural disasters change the landscape? We have done several investigations and have made predictions as we try to find answers to our questions.
- Social Studies: We have been studying our NH Studies text book to find out about the lives of the Abenaki and the first humans who settled in New Hampshire.
