K Art

Hello parents of our Kindergarten artists. Welcome! There are a few housekeeping items that Ms. Gray and I would like to address as we transition to remote learning: every week your artist will receive a Creative Challenge/Lesson. Please be sure to refer to the list below for the art teacher you should be e-mailing when the challenge/lesson is complete. We will also be notifying your child's homeroom teacher when a Creative Challenge/Lesson has been posted so that they can inform you. It will be a help if you could please e-mail us the completed assignment by or on the day of your child's art class, this will allow us to keep an attendance record. Please contact Ms. Gray or I with anything you need or want to share during our time away from seeing your creative kiddos.

Creative Challenge 2. A COLLECTION

What is a collection? Do you already have a collection? Well, if you answered, no, take a look around your house...

A collection is a group of interesting objects that a person seeks out, gathers, organizes and puts on display.

For example, all the artwork you make all school year is an Art collection.

Today, even I discovered I could make lots of little collections with the stuff in my house!

So can YOU make a collection?

1. Look around your house and gather a group of objects. This could be coins, buttons, toys, anything!

2. Find a tabletop with good lighting and organize your objects, displaying your objects like you would display your artwork.

3. Take a picture of your collection and send it to my email awoods@sau72.org Don't forget your name!:)

Need some inspiration for this project? Check out artist Lisa Congdon, a collection a day. Its mesmerizing! (Google image)

Creative Challenge 4. The Doodle Game

This weeks Art Challenge is to grab a partner, use your imagination and DOODLE TOGETHER!!!

The Doodle game is a simple drawing game that can be played anywhere. All you need is a partner, something to write on and a drawing utensil. It was a favorite game among my family and friends growing up. It is creative, non-competitive, and can be played anywhere to pass the time. We particularly enjoyed it when we are hanging out in coffee shops or restaurants waiting for our meals, as it can easily be played on the backs of napkins or placemats.

Instructions:

  1. Find a partner and decide who is going to draw first (this is Player #1).
  2. Player#1 draws a random SQUIGGLE on the paper. This could be any type of line - a straight line, a zig-zag line, a straight line with a zig-zag line at the end. Any random line.
  3. Player #2 then has to get creative and turn that SQUIGGLE line into something. Maybe you turn that straight zig-zag line into a key, or the mouth of an alligator.
  4. Switch rolls. Player #2 now draws the SQUIGGLE for Player #1 and Player #1 gets creative and turns the squiggle into something.
  5. Repeat the steps as many times as you want.

***When you're finished playing you can either keep your drawings as quick simple DOODLES or you could go back and add MORE DETAILS to the DOODLES by adding color, texture etc... to make them a more finished piece***

Have FUN DOODLING your heart away, TOGETHER!

Creative Challenge 5. Earth Art for Earth Day

Want to learn more about Earth Day? Check out this video below!

Need a little inspiration? Check out some of these cool ideas!

Copy of Earth Art Ideas

Some days we may feel like this current World crisis is nothing but bad news, but wait, there's a silver lining...

Mother Earth is healing. Pollution levels across the globe are dramatically decreasing as populations across the globe stay home. As fewer drivers make daily commutes, fewer boats take to the waterways and fewer planes take flight, our beautiful planet is getting the much needed break she deserves.

This is a Cause for Celebration!

Help celebrate Earth Day, April 22, 2020 by creating Earth Art!

1. Look at home for materials you can use to make a picture or create a sculpture of the EARTH. You can use art supplies, play dough, recycled materials, etc.

2. Once you have finished your Earth Art, take a picture and email it to me awoods@sau72.org so that I can share it in a slideshow in celebration of Earth Day 2020, next Wednesday, April 22.

3. Have fun, be creative and remember...

The "EARTH" without "ART" is just "EH"

Creative Challenge 6. Mother's Day ~ Art Bouquet

Who is Pablo Picasso?

He's probably the most famous artist of the 20th century. He was born in Spain. People who knew him as a child said he could draw before he could speak. His father, an artist, was amazed at his son’s enormous talent. He gave all his brushes and paints to Picasso when the boy was 13. As a teen he moved to Paris to be an artist and the rest is History, Art History!

Want to learn more about Picasso? Watch the video below.

In celebration of Mother's Day May 10th

This week we will find inspiration in Pablo Picasso's artwork called Bouquet of Peace, 1958, which depicts one person giving a bouquet of flowers to another person. The flowers seem like radiant colorful suns. The green stems look like they are shooting up like fireworks. This colorful image is not just a picture of flowers, but also suggests a message of love, from one person to another.

Creating your bouquet:

1. Gather your materials and plan out your idea. You can use art supplies like paints, crayons or markers, you can use paper, scissors and glue, or maybe even recycled materials.

2. Trace or print your hand and arm and create a bouquet of colorful creative flowers for your hand to be holding.

3. Once your artwork is complete, give your bouquet of peace to your Mom or any special person in your life that needs a message of love on Mother's Day. Try to take a picture of you, your artwork and your mom or special person and email it to me awoods@sau72.org and I will share it in our slideshow!

Have a HAPPY week and keep on CREATING ~ Mrs. Woods

Creative Challenge 7. Not a Box

Last month we celebrated Earth Day, however, Earth Day is a day that we should be mindful in celebrating EVERY DAY of the year! In this lesson you will be using a common material - recycled cardboard. Not only is cardboard a resourceful material for making cool Art projects but it can be found in most homes as we discard our daily consumables. In this lesson you are going to use the three R's – reduce, reuse and recycle – which help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Watch the YouTube story 'Not a Box ' by Antoinette Portis.

2. Find some cardboard, I like to cut up actual brown boxes

3. Glue your cardboard rectangle to a piece of paper. Use your imagination to turn it into something else.

4. Add color and details if you can. Really get creative!!!

5. When your masterpiece is complete, take a picture and email it to me at awoods@sau72.org

Happy Imagining ~ Mrs. Woods

Creative Challenge 8. Not a Stick

This Weeks Lesson:

  • Go play outside and gather a few small sticks. Then, choose your favorite one for your project
  • Along with your stick, you will also need, paper and something to draw or color with. (Gluing optional)
  • Similar to last weeks lesson Not a Box, use your imagination to turn your plain old stick into something awesomely amazing!
  • When your artwork is complete, don't forget to take a snap shot and send it my way!

As Spring continues to bloom and the weather gets warmer, getting out to PLAY, EXPLORE, and IMAGINE is essential to staying creative! And thanks to Mother Nature your next resourceful art material can be found OUTSIDE!!

Wait a minute, can sticks, rock, leaves and flowers be used to make art? Check out Antoinette Portis's second book Not a Stick and see where your imagination takes you this time around!

Have fun! ~Mrs. Woods

Creative Challenge 9. Together We Make a Family!

"Family isn't an important thing. It's everything" ~Michael J. Fox

For this next at home art challenge, I want to get to know you better! Who are the people in your family?

Every family on Earth is natures masterpiece and every family looks different! What does your family look like?

To help you create your family portrait, I want you to first go on a scavenger hunt in your kitchen! Look for different sized wooden spoons, measuring spoons or spatulas and use them for tracing each member of your family. Think about the size of each member of your family and decide what utensil you need to draw for dad, mom, you and any other family members you need to add to create your unique family.

Perhaps you have art supplies at home and you want to use them. Consider using the spoon itself as your family members, either by drawing on it with a sharpie and decorating each one or by going all out with paints, glue and googly eyes!

Does your family have a stash of unused plastic spoons or do you want to up-cycle your old wooden spoons? These ideas below could be a fun to try!

Once you have created your family portrait, either by tracing utensils or decorating them, email me a picture awoods@sau72.org

I can't wait to see all the people in your family!! (No need to add anyone's names:)

Have fun! ~Mrs. Woods
