Kindergarten Thematic Units

Forces and Interactions: Pushes and Pulls

Students begin to learn about machines, pushes, and pulls. We discuss the ways that machines do the work that people used to do and help to make our work easier. We learn about how the shape of an object helps it function to solve a problem.

Plants and Animals

In Kindergarten, seasonal changes and the world around us provide the perfect framework for much of our science learning. We explore the life cycles of a butterfly, apples, and pumpkins in the fall. As winter approaches, we discuss the cycle of seasonal changes including temperature and what this means to the various living creatures. We discuss what it means to be healthy and to stay healthy. We learn about animals native to New Hampshire and their life cycles. We spend time reading and learning about animals and how they are able to get what they need to survive (food, water, shelter and space).  Students spend time in the spring learning about NH animals and why this is the perfect place for them to live.

Weather & Climate

Students learn about the seasons and how seasonal changes impact the Earth. We keep track of weather trends and discuss seasonal change over time. We monitor temperatures and have discussions about the tools we use to help us adapt to changes in temperature as a result of the seasons.
