**Daily homework and important information can be found in your child's agenda and should be checked on a daily basis**
Each month, your child will receive a Reading log that they will be responsible for completing and returning back to school at the end of the month. It is my expectation that students are reading AT LEAST 20 minutes each night. Reading can be done in any format your family prefers and the amount of time should be recorded on the calendar.
Homework should be completed Monday-Thursday, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday being off days. For reading, the goal is 80 minutes each week. If families have an obligation some nights and students are unable to complete their homework, off days are a great time to make up the minutes or they can be tacked on to a different week night. If students do more than the expected amount each week, they will receive extra credit when the calendar is turned in.
Instead of spelling this year, we will be working on vocabulary. Spelling patterns will still be taught in the classroom on a weekly basis, but not expected to be tested on. Each unit will last for two weeks. Students will be bringing home a set of 8 vocabulary words, as well as a vocabulary choice board. Each week, students will be expected to complete at least three of the options on the choice board. This will result in a total of 6 completed activities by the end of the two-week period. If any of the chosen activities require work to be done on a separate sheet of paper, students can hand that in at the end of the two weeks. This will ensure no work goes missing and students can receive credit for all of the activities completed.
Our students spend a great deal of time working hard during the day, families have a lot to accomplish in the evenings when everyone arrives home, so my hope is that the homework is as painless as possible. I will send out reminders, but calendars should be signed by an adult and returned to school at the end of each month.
Additionally, every few weeks students will be sent home with a set of fact fluency flashcards to practice for math. Fact fluency is the foundation for math this year, so it is very important students are practicing these each night. The flashcards will change throughout the year to match the student's abilities.
