Present and Future Vision

This is an exercise to help you describe where you are now, and to figure out where you want to be. This will be done in PAIRS, to help you get feedback from someone else. Feedback might be helpful in describing yourself currently, and in deciding on steps you will take in the future. Each PERSON will create their own board, however.

Step 1: Where are you now? What kind of person are you?

  • This is where you describe yourself! Either mind map or brainstorm descriptive words for yourself - they can be adjectives (kind, smart, etc.) or nouns (student, dancer, athlete, etc.). We often have trouble describing ourselves accurately and positively, so get input from your partner in this - you might be surprised how they see you!

Step 2: Based on these descriptions, choose at least 4 pictures to describe you now (more are always good in this case!). You may add captions or descriptions if you think it will help us understand your meaning.

Step 3: Where do you see yourself in your future? Think ahead about 10 years - where do you want to be?

  • On your own, or with a partner, brainstorm the following:
    • Where are you living?
    • Who is in your life?
    • What do you do for work?
    • How did you get where you are - apprenticeship program? Training program? College?
  • Now create an action plan!
    • What steps will you need to take to make this happen?
    • Work backwards. For example:
      • Own your own house —>
      • Get a loan —>
      • Save money —>
      • Work to earn money —>
      • Training/ apprenticeship/ college
  • Illustrate your action plan in the same way you did for your current self.
    • Choose at least 8 pictures to describe where you will be and how you will get there.
    • Glue or tape these pictures to your current self board, in any order that makes sense to you. Include captions if it will help us understand your illustrations.
    • Include a TITLE for your board.

We will post these around the room and have a walk around to see each others’ work - so make your choices appropriate and understandable!
