Senate Info and Senate Committees

“The mission of Student Council is to develop leaders and strengthen the Portsmouth High School community.” Student Council members:

1) act as model representatives to our school, Portsmouth High School alumni and the surrounding community.

2) act as a political voice for the student body.

3) foster an inclusive sense of community at Portsmouth High School.



About the Senate:

The Senate was created to empower students to engage in dialogue and organize ways to improve our school community. The Senate includes all elected Student Council members and is led by a Senate president and vice president. Meetings occur three times a year on Saturday mornings. The Senate meetings are student-led using a set of discussion rules that help to ensure fairness and that all voices are heard. The Senate secretary records a summary of the meeting in the form of "minutes," which are posted below:

Senate Committees:

The Senate carries out initiatives by voting to assemble committees to carry out various initiatives. These committees are chaired by Student Council members, but any student or staff member can join. The permanent committees are listed below:

2022 Holiday Raffle Information

The Equity and Inclusion Committee is dedicated towards initiatives the help to ensure full inclusion and respect to all students. In 2020, this committee partnered with Portsmouth Listens to engage in student-led dialogues on the topic of equity and inclusion. It also organized semi-formal for students in the PHS Unified Program.

Student Council strives to develop leaders who organize inclusive, highly engaging opportunities that are accessible and respectful to all students. We remove barriers by working to make sure all students are able to participate in events regardless of financial status, ability, or location. We strive to proactively engage in efforts to achieve full inclusion for all students.
