FUTURE PLANNING
College requirements vary, and each student must check the admissions requirements of the colleges to which he/she will apply. The strength of a student's course load will be a factor in the college admissions process. Students planning to attend college should consult with their counselors and teachers for assistance in selecting courses which will help them achieve the desired results. The college counselor works closely with each school counselor on issues of college planning. The college counselor works individually with seniors and second semester juniors concerning future planning.
The following information can be used as a guide to the student who is interested in planning for post-secondary education.
DUAL ENROLLMENT - AP - HONORS
PHS is proud to offer our students a variety of rigorous academic programs and classes. Our Dual Enrollment, AP and Honors classes provide unique yet equally challenging experiences for students. Click on any of the images to see a side by side comparison and to learn a little more.
Dual enrollment(DE) refers to students being enrolled—concurrently—in two distinct academic programs or educational institutions - in our case, PHS and either SNHU, UNH, or Great Bay CC
AP offers college-level courses and exams that you can take in high school.
Honors courses offer more demanding college-preparatory coursework that are considered to be more academically challenging.
CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION
Career and Technical Education organizes programming into 16 career clusters that lead to 79 career pathways. These pathways break down into the occupations identified by the US Department of Labor. Here at PHS-CTE, we prepare students for these specific career clusters within our program offerings:
Students will continue their paths after graduation as they transition into the next stage of their career development. Post-graduation paths include:
College-bound pathway-- connecting your degree & major selection with a career passion.
Employment-bound pathway-- connecting your career passion with a job or the military after high school
Training bound pathway-- connecting your career passion with more training (trade school, professional school, certifications, associates programs at the community colleges)
Exploration pathway-- connecting your career passions to a gap or deferral year, travel, interning, service learning abroad, etc.
Career Pathways
Our PHS learning community benefits from the on-campus presence of Career and Technical Education programs which reinforce our school-wide culture of 21st Century essential skill attainment to become career ready. Applied opportunities for experiential programs such as Extended Learning, Work-based Learning, internships, club involvement, and project-based learning in our classrooms encourage students to view their high school education as a means of career exploration. The industry and community connections our students make while engaging in problem-solving and critical thinking enrich their studies and help to further the skills, attributes, and habits of mind of PHS’s portrait of a learner.
