Come on a Book Walk!
Come on a Book Walk!
Program will run
Sept - Nov
April - June
We do not walk in inclement weather.
Appropriate clothing and closed-toed footwear is required.
Listening to an audiobook during the physical act of walking becomes an immersive experience. Walking boosts motivation to keep listening, and can be a very effective, screen-free mental escape.
To encourage this healthy habit with students and staff, the Library is launching a CAVBlock short-listening activity in Fall 2026.
What's a Book Walk? Groups of listeners will walk to pre-loaded short pieces (20 minutes max). When the track runs out, we turn around and discuss what we heard on the way back to the building. All participants are encouraged to make recommendations for future listens.
Students interested in participating should sign up for an available CAVBlock time in Adaptive Scheduler. All participants will gather in the Library at 10am to get a media player and headphones. (Sorry, no cell phones allowed!)
The group will go outside to walk either around the building or around the track.
Stories will vary and tracks titles will be listed on a menu sheet.
Come walk and listen with us!
Reading Speed vs. Listening Speed
Standard Audiobooks: Most narrators speak at roughly (150) to (160) words per minute (wpm) to ensure the story is engaging and clearly understood.
Visual Reading: The average adult reads silently at roughly (250) to (300) wpm.
By increasing playback speeds, adjusting the speed to (1.25)x or (1.5)x can bring your listening speed in line with your natural silent reading pace.
