Education standards help educators understand what students should know and be able to demonstrate by providing clear goals for student learning. The NH College and Career Ready Standards (NH CCRS) include learning goals for a variety of content areas, such as the State's English language arts/literacy and mathematics standards. The standards were adopted after a state-led effort referred to as the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
NH CCRS include the critical skills, or competencies, necessary for skills in careers, college, and life.
Newfound Schools report students' academic progress using a system of competency-based grading. This means that teachers assess students' mastery of the essential knowledge, content, and skills for each grade level and for each subject area.
Grade-level content-area competencies were created in collaboration by Newfound educators and are based upon the NH College and Career Ready Standards.
There are two parts to a Competency. The first part is the actual statement of competency describing what the students need to be able to do. This is then broken down into specific skills (indicators) that the students will be expected to learn, know, or demonstrate. Formative and summative assessments are designed based on the indicator statements. Educators assess mastery of the overall Competencies by assessing students' progress as outlined in indicator statements.
If you have additional questions about how your child is assessed, please contact their teacher.
Student academic progress and growth are communicated using these descriptors:
Students are generally considered at grade level if they can consistently demonstrate mastery of competencies at the “Basic” and/or “Proficient” level.
Newfound Area School District grade-level competencies are being updated for the
2025-2026 school year and will be available soon.
