Tinkering is about hands-on experiences, learning from failures, and unstructured time to explore and invent. And through the processes of exploration and invention, lies the potential for innovation. A tinkerer is someone who experiments with materials and ideas to fully understand their capacities, and who further iterates on their learning to find better solutions to current problems.

What is the goal of the Tinkering Club?
What is the goal of the Tinkering Club?
The TFS Tinkering Club has been set up with the goal of fostering curiosity, creativity and imagination in young minds and implanting skills such as design mind-set, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing. Students will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand what, how, and why aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are integrated into daily life.

Students will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand what, how, and why aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are integrated into daily life.
Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Viands are, will be your tour guides of learning possibilities. It will be our job to introduce you to various types and uses of technologies and then step out of your way so you can tinker and develop your own technological imaginations.

The TFS Tinkering Club is open to all students at TFS. A new theme will be introduced once a month for students to work on. The information provided is a culmination of ideas from quality programs such as the ATAL Innovation Mission, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Genius Hour, Boston Children's Museum, Interactive Design Foundation and STEM and STEAM initiatives. I have adapted them to be developmentally appropriate for elementary students.

We live in a world that is filled with uncertainty and change. Success in the future will depend not on what we know, or how much we know, but on our ability to think and act creatively as what we know evolves. Not everything works the first time you attempt it. If the first thing that happens when something does not work is it frightens us, then we will not be willing to embrace change. When things don't work, we can figure out how to make them work by tinkering with them. We might discover a new way to make them work or work better. Tinkering brings ideas and creativity together in a powerful way.
