Capstone Project

A Brief History of the Capstone Project

The Gorham School Board voted unanimously in October of 1997 to make the Senior Project a mandatory 0.5 credit course for all GHS students.

In April of 2017, The G.R.S. Cooperative School Board approved changes to the Capstone Project. The first was a name change from Senior Project to Capstone Project. Next, students were allowed to select from three options: 1) Honors, 2) College and Career, and 3) Career and Technical. The Capstone Project consisted of a career portfolio (physical binder or electronic portfolio), written requirements, paper/journals, slideshow, display board, and a community presentation. Students should begin their project in their junior year.

In September of 2019, the G.R.S. Cooperative School Board voted to continue with the Capstone Project with the minimum requirement being 30 hours of community service. Students may still choose to complete a College & Career Awareness, Job & Training Preparation, or Research & Design project in lieu of community service. An Honors Project is also available for those who wish.

These projects are focused on career-related objectives for students with an educational experience that prepares them to be college and career ready. This opportunity allows students to reflect on their career goals, research career fields they wish to pursue following high school, and compile evidence of career-related experiences. They complete 10 career or goal objectives that are displayed in a digital portfolio. Their final project demonstrates their ability to think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, and apply their knowledge to real world issues and scenarios.
