Music and PE Collaborative Dance Unit!
In November, we met in the gym for both PE and Music classes, and learned dances from different cultures, as well as New England Folk dances and party dances. Here are the dance-along videos we learned; kids are welcome to keep practicing at home!
Meter and Spooky Songs
Last year in Fourth Grade, we learned about MINOR music: music where the notes are changed to make the music sad or spooky. This year we learned that one of the only notes that makes music minor is the note "me," (instead of the major "mi") and we learned to play "do re me fa so" on many instruments. We also learned about METER (the number of beats in a measure and the type of note that gets the beat). We learned about 4/4, 2/4, 3/4,and 6/8 meter, then each class created their own spooky song to a poem in one of those meters. We performed the poems during the week of Halloween in the library, as a collaborative celebration of learning, where we played spooky music and read spooky stories!

Folk Song Unit
5th graders learned about folk songs: songs that are passed down in a culture through generations. We sang and listened to three songs tied to the African American struggle for freedom and civil rights. While singing, we focused on techniques to achieve a strong singing voice, and added dynamics.
"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is said to be Harriet Tubman's favorite song, and was sometimes used as code in the Underground Railroad.
"Follow the Drinking Gourd" was a map encoded in a song that helped slaves escape to the Free North
"Hold on Just a Little While Longer" is a song by Cleophus Robinson, Jr. that speaks of resilience and hope.

5th Grade Song: "Carried Me With You"
This year the fifth graders voted to sing and play "Carried Me With You" by Brandi Carlile as their 5th Grade song, which they will perform at the 5th Grade Graduation and on the last day of school. This is the last rehearsal of the song recorded in each class.
We played this song on guitar, ukulele, piano, bucket drum, and xylophone, and we sang the lyrics.

Parodies
Our UNH Student Intern, Ms. Frye, taught 5th graders about parodies: songs that imitate an original song. Each 5th Grade class wrote their own parody of Miley Cyrus's "Party in the USA."
Enjoy this YouTube playlist of each class song!
Guitar!
5th Graders are learning to read and play chords on the guitar.
Here are some chord charts you can use to play along with popular tunes. Each of these songs only has two chords. With a little practice, you can play the whole song! Play the song along with the popular recording using YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, etc. so that you can learn to play in time with the music!

Latin Music: "Sale El Sol"
Fifth Graders learned a little bit about the music and culture of Latin America, then learned a Spanish song called "Sale El Sol," which they first sang in Spanish, then learned on 7 different parts. They chose which part to play in a class performance

5th Grade Soundscape Project!
This is the result of our collaborative project with Art, P.E., and Library around National Parks. Students chose a National Park to research and write a poem about in Library class, then paint a landscape in Art class. In the music room, we are learning how to create soundscapes representative of the National Parks we chose. In preparation to create a soundscape, students discussed instrument timbre, improvisation techniques, the importance of “do,” balancing sound in whole-class improvisation, and musical questions and answers. After polishing our soundscapes, we recorded multiple versions, evaluated them, and picked the best one in each class!
"Dweller of the Cave"
Fifth graders practiced singing in different OCTAVES depending if they like singing high or low. This song gives them that opportunity.

"Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" allowed enslaved people to express the sadness of being separated from their families, and was also sometimes an Underground Railroad song.
"Lift Every Voice and Sing" is a Civil Rights song, connecting the dark past of slavery and segragation to a hopeful future of justice and equality.

"Give Peace a Chance"
Fifth Graders learned the C major and G7 Chords. This is a song by John Lennon we played along with.
Mr. Schmitt's Fifth Grade class of 2023-2024 playing "Give Peace a Chance" on guitar
To use C Major and G7 to play this "Give Peace a Chance", you'll need to use this recording, because John Lennon's actual song is in a different key and uses the chords D and A7

Fifth graders practiced singing in different OCTAVES depending if they like singing high or low. This song gives them that opportunity.

"Ghost of Tom"
Fifth graders played along with a spooky song in E minor called "Ghost Of Tom." We talked about how adding space inside your mouth on the "oo" makes the song sound more "minor"
