Faith Ringgold, born 1930 in Harlem, New York, is a painter, mixed media sculptor, performance artist, writer, teacher and lecturer.
During the early 1960’s Ringgold traveled in Europe where she created her first political paintings. In the early 1970’s Ringgold began making soft sculptures and masks. inspired by African art. Her quilts became quite popular as she told stories through this medium.
Georgia O'Keeffe was an American modernist artist. She was known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been called the "Mother of American modernism".
Georgia's famous quote: “When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.”
Thomas Hart Benton was an esteemed 20th century painter and muralist. Along with Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry, he was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement. The fluid, sculpted figures in his paintings showed everyday people in scenes of real life in the United States.
