Spelling Contract

Weekly Spelling Contract - Updated November 27, 2016


Complete all activities before repeating any activity.


Use your spelling words to complete your weekly spelling contract.

Write the value and number of each activity on your paper.

Please write neatly, using white lined paper and always turn in your best work.


5 Point Activities

  1. Opposite - Write 5 List Words using the opposite hand to which you would normally write
  2. Making Words - Choose 10 List Words and for each, jumble some of the letters to make new words. e.g. Tomato = moat
  3. Inside Words - Choose 10 List Words and find a ‘smaller’ word in each. e.g. capacity = cap or city
  4. Write the words in reverse ABC order, or Z to A.
  5. Write the words in ABC order.
  6. Write your words using red for vowels and blue for consonants
  7. Neatly print each word. Next to it, write the word in cursive.
  8. Word Worm - Create a Word Worm using 5 or more list words. Connecting the last letter of the previous word and the first letter of the following word. e.g. “fatherubbishousexcellentraumatic”


10 Point Activities

9. Other Hand - Write your words once with each hand

10. Scramble Words - Write your words with the letters scrambled. Then write them again correctly.

11. Rainbow Words - Write your words 1 time with each letter a different color.

12. Classify each word as a noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, or adjective.

13. Write each word and divide it into syllables. (Use a dictionary to help you) Organize your list into groups with the same number of syllables.

14. Multi Sentences - Using ALL List Words; write sentences containing 2 or more list words. Underline each list word e.g., Unfortunately the goalkeeper injured himself when he blocked the ball.

15. Take a practice test at home. Write any missed word 3x each. Include a parent signature on the test.

16. Write each of your spelling words “Graphic Style” (bubble letters, block letters, etc.)

17. Use all of your spelling words to write 10 or more questions.


20 Point Activities

18. Criss-Cross - Write your words on graph paper (found in our classroom paper drawers) and have them intersect using a common letter.

19. Word Sort - Look at your words and put them in groups. Write down the groups and explain how you sorted them.

20. Word Exercise - Spell your words while doing your favorite exercise. (Parent Signature Required)

21. Write a story using all the words. Circle the words that you use.

22. Draw pictures to help you remember each word. Write the word under each picture.

23. Make and complete a crossword puzzle using www.puzzlemaker.com, or you can use graph paper found in the paper drawers of our classroom.

24. Write an alliterative sentence for 15 of your list words. e.g - nautical - Nearly all underwater turtles include calling ants lazy.

25. Write a poem using all of your spelling words.

26. Dictionary Meanings - rewrite the dictionary meanings 10 of your list words, using your own words. Please do not copy the meanings directly from the dictionary.

Each week you will have an opportunity to earn 50 points. For example if you complete one 20 point assignment, two 10 point assignments, and two 5 point assignments you will earn 50 out of 50 points. You cannot earn more than 50 points. All work is due on Friday (or the test day… sometimes this might be a Thursday).


This activity sheet will be posted on our classroom website. You may start your activities ahead of time if you would like. You could get a head start the week before we do the actual list. All of the lists for the year may be found on spellingcity.com


**All activities must be done in pencil, unless otherwise stated, this is important.

**Write your name on each page and the assignment and points its worth.

**Staple all sheets together.
