AVS Summer Reading 2017 for 5th Graders who will be in 6th Grade Next Year

Overview & Purpose

  • All books this year (6th-8th) will focus around the idea/theme of building a better world: showing leadership, making a difference, or working towards social justice
  • The purpose of summer reading is to encourage the enjoyment of reading, to develop your abilities in reading and writing, and to prevent the summer slide

Education Standards

  1. Read and comprehend literary and informational texts independently and proficiently
  2. Determine a theme or central idea of a text
  3. Cite textual evidence to support your analysis
  4. Produce clear and coherent writing appropriate to task

Materials Needed

  1. Access to the summer reading Google Classroom page
  2. One of the approved books from the grade level reading list
  3. A variety of organizers for reading and writing (all available on Google classroom)
  4. Reference document for elements of plot defined

Activity

  1. Pick a book from the reading list - I am suggesting you complete this by July 10
  2. Sign into the Google Classroom and identify which book you picked
    1. “My Book Choice” assignment
  3. Read the book (don’t wait until the week before school!)
  4. As you read, complete the plot organizer (available on Google Classroom)
    1. “Plot Organizer” assignment
    2. Reference page also available for definition of terms
  5. When finished, complete the organizer on the book’s connection to theme.
    1. “Theme Organizer”
  6. Summer Reading Written Response
  7. Complete the 6th grade writing prompt assignment in Google Classroom

These are the book choices for the 6th graders. The Griffin Library will be acquiring extra copies for students to borrow this summer or you may choose to purchase your own book.
