National Book Awards: We also follow the prestigious national youth media awards, which are chosen by the American Library Association (ALA) each January! In the weeks leading up to the announcement, students make their own predictions and see how their choices stack up against the official winners.
The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Mock Caldecott Panel: Students in grades K–4 get to participate in their very own Mock Caldecott judging panel!
Voting & Comparison: Students evaluate top contenders, discuss the artwork, and vote for the books they believe deserve to win. Once the real Caldecott Medal winners are announced by the American Library Association, we compare our student selections to the official national winners!
The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American children's literature.
Newbery Book Tasting: To explore top contenders, students participate in a "Book Tasting" where they get a quick preview—or sample—of various eligible books.
Rating & Reviews: After tasting a book, students evaluate the storyline and writing style to decide if they would give it a "star rating" and crown it as a potential Newbery winner!
