Fred C. Underhill School

Welcome to Kindergarten

At Fred C. Underhill School, the students learn, grow, and play together as a community of learners where they feel responsible, safe, and kind at school and in the community.

Fred C. Underhill School's Kindergarten is a full-day program. Kindergarteners receive instruction in reading, mathematics, social studies, science, and social/emotional learning. The teachers address the various learning styles and needs through the use of differentiated instruction and research-based programs and strategies.

Additionally, kindergarten classes have the opportunity to receive instruction from the Unified Arts teachers each week. Our Unified Arts programs include music, physical education/health, and art. The students also visit the Library/Media Center to receive instruction from the school librarian and to check books out from our large collection.

The students learn about identifying feelings, cause and effect, and community. A number of programs are used to guide social/emotional instruction throughout the year. We use a combination of resources including Responsive Classroom approach, Social Thinking instruction, the PBIS framework, and the Zones of Regulation. The skills gained in these areas allow the kindergarteners to safely and productively participate in all facets of the school day.

The kindergarten days are filled with play-based learning experiences both indoors and out. The students participate in various free-play and guided-play activities. The skills that children learn and practice during play carry over and enhance their learning and contribute to a developmentally appropriate kindergarten experience.
